I do not see a major boost in synthetic performance. I ran 3dmark 2006 Pro on a native resolution on 1440x900 and got 5238 with 8700M.
But the temperature stays cool. After the 20-25minute of 3dmark the temperature was
GPU - 60, ACPI - 50, CORE 0/1 - 40/35, HDD - 48
I will have some more tests before I make any decision
-
Ran the standard 3DMark test. It seems that it is not a improvement for non-SLI Computers. I think I will go back to my non-modded 179.13 9800 driver. Just re-confirmed the 179.13's 3dmark #s, they were +- 5 points.
^ the Hl2 Lost Coast FPS for the 179.13 driver was 124.75. 2.2FPS higher than the 180.42 driver's 122.51.
Even the Moded INF 179.13 is slightly better.
GRID - 1400x900, highest settings, Vsync off. Note: Because I was playing the game the numbers might differ from time to time, depending on what I do. The 179.13 has better lowest and average FPS compared to the 180.42
^ Back Pack: Driving so far back that you can not see any other cars.
- With Pack: Driving in 5th or 6th with car behind and in front.
- Crash: A medium speed impact into a tire wall, causing your car to total. (possibly take another car out aswell)
The 179.13 handles the older directX 9.0c better than the 180.42. While the 180.42 is better at directX 10.
Conclusion:
I prefer the 179.13 with the un-modified INF file that was made by Alienware for mobile systems. But I run more DirectX 9.0 games, If you run DirectX 10 games I would recommend the 180.42 -
Good stuff. Hoping for a performance boost or something.
I went back to 177.92 a while ago.

-
Thanks for the test results. Guess there is no reason for single GPU users to upgrade yet.

Dwend has provided instructions on how to install this driver without the modified inf file at the bottom of the page. ONLY FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE THE 8800M GTX IN YOUR COMPUTER. -
is 179.13 much better than 177.92 (what i'm using now)?
-
What I have seen in past the only way to find out if it will work better for you is to try it yourself. Usually they don't have major differences, but heating and actual game performance can be judged by you.
I would recommend to give it a shot and try it yourself. It does not take much time to revert back though. -
This one gives me better control over heating, my temp. stays few points less
-
@Dwend
Sorry for hacking the thread.. Are you able to control your car in Grid? for me it keeps getting out of control... toooo much realism I guess. Is there any trick to keep it back on track ? I have played many racing games but this one seem to be too much problematic with respect to control -
-
-
yep... graphics are amazing... and I am playing to buy two controllers.
One wheel and another sidewinder for Flight Simulator X -
I use my ps3 controller in GRID, minor hacking required, works flawlessly...
-
wish i had a ps3 or better wish. i xbox 360 was that amazing, in same price

179.13 vs. 180.42 - which one is better?
-
I updated to the 180.42 from 179.13 last night. I ran 3Dmark06 and got more or less the exact same score (9500). I only played one game - Need For Speed: Most Wanted. And I have to say the Image Quality seems to have mproved a little - I can't put my finger on it, it just seemed sharper and more vibrant. Could just be me ... I'll have to run a couple more games and try to keep an objective eye.
-
I'm going to try updating myself. If there are any FPS boosts, I'll let you all know.
-
I think I might do some more testing. Including Nvidia demo's FPS, Temp monitoring, and picture quality.
-
Hey,
I can't seem to get my nVidia driver to 177.92, which seems to be the best version correct?
I run an nVidiea 8700 GT. I can't even find my driver version to be honest, my "ForceWare" says 165.32 though. How do I upgrade it? The Laptop2Go site scan tells me mine's all up to date. -
you can find it in the forum of ltv2go.
-
Thanks whizz - +rep!
-
-
Whizzo - it still won't let me update my driver. It says:
"Could not locate any drivers compatible with your hardware."
I'm downloaing this driver:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20809
Whats the deal! -
oh, wait. that driver is made for the 9800m-gt, so you need to trick your system into thinking it's got a 9800m-gt installed. try this guide (last post on the second page):
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=305074&page=2 -
No if you scroll down on that INF code it says "8700m GT".
Plus I have Windows XP not Vista, not sure if that changes things. -
OS shouldn't change anything. and you say you've selected the "8700m-gt" option and it won't install?
-
I don't even get to choose do I ? I double click "setup" and it opens the nVidia setup and then gives me that error from before !
-
didn't you follow the guide from dwend i posted the link to?
-
No because I don't know why I should be tricking my computer into thinking I have a 9800 when the 8700m GT is IN the list of working GFX cards no?
-
do you have msn?
-
yep. sent you a PM.
-
-
been trying to help on MSN, and it's sorta worked, except he got some error messages, for example "error: setup could not find nvmcss.dll"
any ideas? -
I sent you a PM so get me into the conversation over MSN
-
So...anyone on XP 32 bit tried these yet?
. Im still stuck on 165.32

Garbage! 3x lower FPS on all games compared to the current AW ones! im going back!
-
3x lower? Like getting 1/3 of the 179.13 framerates? How is that possible?
-
He probably meant 3 points lower
-
nope, i was getting 30 fps in starting zone in crysis (medium, no AA, 1024xWhatever) and was getting 10 fps after update. Just rolled back and my fps shot back up!
-
-
idk, done it a thousand times b4 on other laptops, download the file and replace INF with modded one (as needed)
-
And you are SURE you weren't in stealth mode?
-
You might have had a conflicting driver. Part of the old driver was not replaced.
Back to The 180.42 vs 179.13. The 179.13 handles the older directX 9.0c better than the 180.42. While the 180.42 is better at directX 10.

Hi guys. I have a question that is kind of daft. Ok I want to upgrade to the 179.13 drivers. I have downloaded them from lv2g without the modded inf and unzipped them. According to dwends guide, I update the drvers using the option from device manager. Followed his instructions exactly but it ends up saying that windows could not proceed because access is denied.
Am I supposed to uninstall the driver before doing this as is normally done or is it supposed to be done the way I did i.e. with the old drives stil installed ?
