I was poking around the net and came across the lateset Arima/Flextronics notebook chassis and was surprised by what I found. The latest chassis is an update to the chassis used in our beloved M9750. The only two changes I can see from the picture posted is the extra key next to the space bar as well as the space bar being shorter and the case being glossy. Everything else seems to be the same. It also says it has a backlit keyboard. The specs are quite interesting, It is a montevina based notebook with ATI M88 crossfire video. I am now wondering if this motherboard will fit in the M9750. It would seem the if AW wanted to refresh the M9750 they could, maybe this is why they are still keeping it around. It probably doesn't mean anything is going to happen, just though I would share. Here is the link

That's not quite the M17x and it's miles away in technology compared to the M9750. From my point of view the M9750 is long dead and it will stay that way. Don't get your hopes up so high.
"Chipset -> Intel Cantiga PM45+ICH9M-Enhanced" means the new chipset coming in July/August.

The M88 is the Radeon mobility HD3870. It is rumored to be just about as fast as the 8800M GTX or perhaps just a bit slower. We should start seeing some in the new montevina notebooks when they are finally released.

this notebook is tidbit thicker than than the m9750

    m9750 dimensions:397.51 x 298.45 x 38.1 mm
    W940 DI dimensions: 395.9 x 299.45 x 42.56 mm

i doubt that really makes any conflicting part in that the m9750 couldn't upgrade it's hardware to this notebook. it would be awesome if we could upgrade our notebooks, but that would mean alienware would need to support this if it worked. however, this would make the m9750 pretty much on par if not maybe a little more powerful than the m17x which i'm not sure they would want to do just yet.

Like I've said, the M9750 is a dead end notebook. Alienware will not let people upgrade when they have a replacement -> M17x.
It might be something Alienware might use when Montevina is released.

Agreed, the M9750 is at the end of its life cycle and the M17 is here to replace it.

Dead end? That hurts. Those of us, such as myself, with first gen 17" laptops see the M9750 as a huge leap forward.

...and it has already been shown that the M9750 can work with both ATi cards from the W840Di/M17 and possibly future Radeon 4xxx cards (though it may near the PSU max). So the M9750 is still a capable machine :)

i just gotta get my hands on those 3870's this summer, and then maybe a t7600. too bad they're like $650 bucks brand new. i don't understand why old outdated technology remains expensive...

yeah the t7600 is the fastest processor that will work in the m9750, though, it's only clocked at like 2.33ghz, though i assume you can OC it to maybe 2.5ghz, which is a significant increase for me from 2.0ghz. i'll probably opt for a new cooling pad by then though. i think the NC-1000 might need an upgrade to a lawnmower blade.
