I was just wondering if I wanted to download a huge file and left my m15x on while downloading, would it be a problem?

Is it bad for the laptop and if I leave the power settings to Basic Performance, would that help?

Can you download while having the laptop in hibernation?

I've left the laptop on for like 3 days on high performance. I don't believe it is an issue. Some people have said they leave it on for weeks with no issues.

No. You have to go to your power settings and change how your computer works when the lid is closed. The default settings (from MS) is to have the computer sleep when the lid is closed. You'll basically have to change it so it does not do that.

Computers are designed to run, so you can leave it on as long as you want. I left my old Sager on 24/7 for the better part of two years straight.

i ran mine all night or a week or how ever long it takes to download a file i want on high performance then play a game like cod4,fsx etc and have no issues. The only thing im worried about is the thing catching on fire some how or the lithium batteries blow up.

The possibilities of either of those events occurring are . . . extremely remote, to put it lightly. The laptop's components have fail-safes that automatically shut down the machine once a critical temperature is reached.
Also, after the last battery fiasco, the manufacturing processes were cleaned up so we won't be seeing any more dangerous batteries.

I'm fairly certain he was just joking.

You people should really consider getting a laptop cooler with your m15x if you don't have one, though.

Well I have left my laptop on for more than a week running folding @ home both on the GPU and on the CPU and I've had absolutely no problem at all.

Why would you do that to your gaming laptop.. Do you know how much that stresses the machine when you do that without fans?

By fans do you mean a notebook cooler? And by now, who isn't using a cooler? Even without the cooler, the m15x idles cool unless you're in a very hot room. There is no problem leaving it on for a day or two.

i dont use a notebook cooler for my 1710. ambient room temp is 26c. CPU is at 37 and GPU is at 44 with the offset for i8kfangui. 7950gtx. Not sure why the 8 series runs a good deal warmer as i have my boss's precision 6300 with the 3600 quadro card on high fans as well and his runs about 58 on idle for the GPU.

Leaving it on all night isn't going to make the fans like... shut off on the back for the exhaust. I wouldn't SHUT the thing as i think that might restrict airflow. just dim the brightness of the LCD down as low as it can and shut off the lights so you can sleep! Speaking of lights when you sleep. the most annoying light is on my antec900 case. that stupid SUPER BRIGHT BLUE HDD activity light is like blinding! Even the P1 case i bought off ebay for my other desktop was never that bad!

You can make it so the display turns off entirely after a period of time. Barely stressing the machine at all...

I agree. I know that my son leaves his desktop on 24x7 for months. However laptops tend to run hotter, especially high end ones like my two Alienwares. The mALX runs a little warmer than my M15X, so I keep cooling pads underneath both, though the M15X doesn't really need it so much.

I've had it on high performance and played Crysis all the way thrugh, then passed it to a friend who also played it through, then played Bioshock and Spore, leaving it on to download while I wasn't playing. All the while on High Performance... I think you'll be fine.

Though I'm really considering a laptop cooler. Can someone point me in the right direction? (forum thread and/or manufacturer website)

I have left mine on for days.... usually on the weekends. But I use mine for travel and she is holding up great. Works hard at work, plays well at play, and records my band... she's tough.

Turning your electronic equipment on and off frequently does more damage to your components then leaving them on (due to thermal expansion). So, leaving your system on for longer periods of time is actually healthier for your system.

Of course that doesn't mean you should be scared to turn your system off. Just that you shouldn't be afraid to leave your system on.
