The lids on all my Alienware laptops are thicker than my new iPad. So that means the iPad has all the guts of a computer and a better screen in a thinner form factor than the LID of my laptops.
A knock against gaming laptops is how big and heavy they are. The screen/lid is an area where they could decrease the size of the system without sacrificing any gaming power. It's puzzling that this isn't an area that they'd devote more energy to. Many other companies are making very thin lids to laptops, especially now with ultra books.
I somewhat understood when they were putting an LED in the lid for the alien head, but now that they've stopped they have no excuse.

Another reason maybe all the antenna's that have to routed into the screen. The cable for my wireless HD card is not that small.
-
Well, I can't say much about this since I don't have any laptop, but I feel like it would be a little silly to have a big chassis for the guts of the computer, and then have a paper thin screen that snaps easily.
So yeah I think it would just look silly more than anything else, imo.
And yeah I wish they were still doing the LEDs in the head(

What GPU and CPU is in the iPad? What games can you max on the iPad?

^none of those things are in the lid last I checked, could be wrong though.

Sure, the iPad might have "some" guts of a computer inside and a very slim form factor, but where is the blu ray player? - where are the discrete gpu's? - where is the keyboard to allow you to game? - can't find 'em?...probably 'cos they aren't there!
Better screen? - I loved the RGBLED on my old M17x R2 and the one I have now isnt terrible by any stretch of the imagination. 9.7" for the iPad is way too small even if its a great resolution.
I also agree with what was posted earlier, about having a paper thin screen/lid on a system like an M18x would look ridiculous. Sure, ultra thin lids look good on ultra books with an equally thin chassis BUT what you end up sacrificing (in the pursuit of aesthetics) is raw power. You will never get a proper gaming laptop in the form factor of an ultrabook - not any time soon anyway!
I don't know how you can even begin to compare an iPad to a gaming laptop LOL - each to their own I guess.... -
My argument, since it was obviously not clear, is about the lids, and only the lids of the laptops.
I was comparing it to the iPad to show that the lids do not need to be as thick as they are for technical reasons. The iPad is able to fit all the components of a computer in there and be thinner than the lids of the laptops without sacrificing screen quality.
The aesthetics argument is an interesting one, but I don't think it would that hard to make an Alienware design with a thin lid work. Is that an intentional design by Alienware? Is the lid to the M11x thinner than the M17x R3, does anyone know?
Also, I would not rate my iPad's screen better than the RGB LED of the M17x R2, but it's obviously better than the other two I have. -
-
Yeah, but it's also newer than the RGB LED.
Newer doesn't mean better, otherwise the screen in the R3 would be better than the screen in the R2. -
-
If an RGB LED and a WLED are too dissimilar for you to compare, then we don't really have anywhere to go from here.

I am personally sick of the "slim formfactor" direction which everything is going to... I look at all the new lappy's instore and they just feel... cheap... light and have no body... I personally like a bit of "bulk and thickness" to the AW lappy's, I feel that there's some sturdyness to it.
I've seen that many MacBook's with their screens snapped it ain't funny... I count atleast 6... and that's in the past 2 years...
Yes, I would like a little less bulk, but I'm overall happy with it... I understand the need for it, so it doesn't bother me.
Just one of those things...
Each to their own. -
Yeah idk I stick to my point about aesthetics though, plus I mean one of the top selling points for my about the AW, though not having one, is everyone complimenting its build quality and sturdiness. If you had a paper thin lid that you could snap in two..then it's kind of stupid having that on top of a super solid base. -
Personally, I find the huge size of gaming laptops to be a magnificent plus. Along with that bulk comes portable performance that is unrivaled. And, I like having the lid as big and sturdy as the lower part of the chassis. I have no interest in owning a little touch screen device. It's just not my style. I would be extremely disappointed with something the size of an ipad. I hope that Alienware keep producing massive anodized aluminum laptops like the M17x R2 and M18x. If they were to stop I would have to find something else and settle for an inferior product.
That's not a knock against someone that wants something small, thin and light like an iPad. Different strokes for different folks, but please don't wish something on those that aren't interested in downsizing. -
Thin support behind screen is a great way to kill pixels and damage panels. Unless they are going to make laptop lids out of strong metals (and jack the price). The lid on my m1530 wasn't super thick and if you want thin laptops, they have them, just expect ipad level costs only scaled up

^^^increased cost and compromise in numerous areas where compromise is unavoidable based on size.

Gimme a 2x thicker lid but with an IPSRGBLED and I'll take it to starbucks and put it on my lap without any second thoughts

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with laptops with "thick" lids. As a matter of fact, I even like it. It actually bothers me more when lids are thin since I feel they aren't sturdy enough. Almost seems like my investment isn't well protected.
-
If my R2 had any sort of battery life I'd take it everywhere with me. -
Colour blind? RGB=WLED!
Also, totally no problems with the lid thickness.I think of the components inside as hardworking soldiers, who are better protected by the thick armour of an M1 Abrams tank rather than a Humvee. -
-
-
jokes aside,I am really colour blind, did compared R2 & R3 before using same wallpaper, not much difference to me. -
IF you want a product that is thin, get the iPad. If you want a product that is good, get an Alienware. Argument settled. Thin screen on laptop=stupid as it would take you 1 week to crack/kill the screen.

The Razor Blade 17 inch laptop is pretty thin, not as powerfull as the 17r3 or the 18x but it has some nice features and is alot thiner.

I wouldn't want the lid on my M11x to be any thinner.
I have a Sony Y netbook with a thinner lid and I don't feel safe with it, it looks like it could snap if someone poked at it gently. -
-
^ It certainly simplifies matters when things are already settled.

I miss the bulk of the old Dell Latitudes. Nice and chunky with a screen latch.
Lid Thickness on all models - Way too thick
