Hey guys I was wondering if anyone else has tried running any linux distro on their M15X. I have been able to run BT3 (beta) it runs beautifully with the latest kernel. All my security apps are working fine. I did have to install the patch for the intel 4965 card to be able to do some work. Now for the down side: I can't run Alienfx, I can't switch to stealth mode, other than that everything else works perfect. Please let me know if anyone else has had some success with other LEGAL OS. If you have any questions just ask!

disclaimer: Please do not try to run linux if you do not what your doing. Also I will not give any tutorial on how to run, install, or hack ANYTHING. Also if you install linux on your hardrive i'm pretty sure AW will count that as a warranty violation.

I've been looking at Ubuntu recently, and am wondering whether to dual boot on my desktop. I can't see much point in running Linux on a gaming laptop though? Or are you dual booting too?

No I run mine off a USB stick. You have a point not to run it on a gaming machine but I use linux a lot for other things. Now i have the best of both worlds. I have my gaming machine and I have my security machine all in one.

Why not use the Intel graphics instead of the 8800gtx for power reasons?

How can it be a warranty violation?
If they refuse to help you with something software related the only thing changed that could concern them is the MBR and that you can change back in second. The rest of your installation is just data they should even have no opinion about because it is private (as long as its not illegal). So i'm quite sure it can't be a warranty violation. As long as you change the MBR to it's original state it's in essence the same machine as they delivered so when asking for support you might want to adjust that.

yes thats the thing, as long as you return it to them with the original installation
what software you install cannot invalidate your warranty unless like bios update programs, it alters the hardware firmware.

so windows xp, 98, nt , linux even attempting to install osx, as long as its not illegal then its fine

I wasn't sure if it would mess up your warranty thats why I put "it might". You know Alienware they always try to find a way to say that you violated their warranty.

No it is not. Windows is the true operating systems. All others are copies, and are cheap, inferior, imitations.

    Here are the Facts.

99 percent of people use windows.
    .8 percent use macintosh
    .1 percent use linux
    .1 percent use os/2

97 percent of people have Zunes.
2 percent of people have apple things.
    1 percent have zen's/others

99.75 percent of people polled in 2007 say windows is the best operating systems.

Microsoft was voted the forbes best 100 companies to work for 20 years in a row. Apple was not mentioned.

Steve jobs announced in 2009, he will be selling Apple Inc. to a 3rd party in return for a windows pc.

To prove SsuRReaLL right, straight from AW's website:

    Question
Will my Alienware system run Linux?

    Answer
    Thank you for your inquiry.

Due to our non-proprietary design philosophy, Alienware systems will probably run Linux just fine; however, we cannot guarantee problem-free operation with this software.

At this time Alienware tests and ships all systems with Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Media Center Edition. As such, we can only warrant correct system function with these operating system alternatives.

There are several distributions of Linux, prepared by different companies or developer groups. Each may have different features. Configuring proper driver support for the hardware may not be totally straightforward when using Linux.

    These are some Linux distributions:

    Mandrake
    Red Hat
    Conectiva
    Debian
    SuSE
    Ubuntu
If you choose to install Linux, please keep in mind that you are not entitled to receive support. To obtain technical support from Alienware, it will be necessary to revert to the operating system originally installed and shipped with the computer.

Well then I guess it won't void your warranty. In the beginning I was just making sure no one blamed me if they tried to do it and messed their system up.

I was thinking about the same thing... and also wondering, shouldn't his dad be the one reviewing notebooks for him and be here in his place ? As in, how much freedom are you gonna give a 14-year old, as far as choosing a damn ultra-expensive laptop goes ?
    Just inappropriate IMO...

I love uBuntu and finished installed uBuntu 8.04 (x64). After successfully installing Vista 64bit I am trying my hands with uBuntu 64bit + AlienFX. You may be able to run AlienFX with WINE... I do not have .Net Framework 3.5 as of now on my ubuntu so cant try it. Halo CE and many other applications run fine on WINE

Weird how I was only able to run BT3 with the BinaryGFX graphics on. Also, were you able to set the resolution to 1440 x 900 because for some reason, I can't get it to look right on my computer.

First off, hello & apologies for dredging this thread back from the dead. :)

I've just got myself a brand spanking new m15x laptop & I'm chuffed to bits. I've put Debian on it and it all seems to be working as it should apart from two aspects, neither of which are essential but icing on the cake.

The first would be the sound, this works through the headphones but not the speakers, I've read that there's a method to get the speakers working but at the expense of the headphones. Has anyone here managed to get both working?

Secondly is the AlienFX. Now I'm using Linux, the light pipe behind the keyboard seems to be constantly set to off. Is this the case with anyone else or just me? All other lighting is working so I thought it strange that only the keyboard lights don't seem to work now. I was playing around with the command centre in windows before it was wiped and it was all working fine... is it possible that I did something to turn them off before rebooting?

    Thanks in advance.
