Ok so here's the scoop. I have a G60jx asus that i parted, it's the newest one with an i5, 4gb ddr3, and a 360m graphics card. So I figured hey this has the same pins as the one in my alienware m15x i can try to put it in and it should work. So first problem I ran into is that it wouldn't fit the card kept hitting where the wifi card went. I have a 8600m in there now and as most people know that's a rectangular graphics card. the 360m is a rectangle with a smaller square protruding on the left side of it. And that protrusion has no circuit work on it, pretty much just there to house the ASUS name on it. so my bright idea was to dremmel it so it would fit lol. So put it into my m15x and you guessed it doesnt work lol. Now I put the older graphics card in and it still doesnt work. Computer turns on and everything but no display. It did work once when I put the older graphics card in and put a stick of ram in it, so I know it's not the screen. Anyone have any suggestions lol. I know it's a very odd situation but any words of advice would be helpful.

Go back in time and stop doing what you did.
-
Did you try dremeling the LCD? Sometimes the crystals get stuck in the "off" position and a little dremeling charges them back to the "on" state.
-
GallardosEggrollshop Notebook Evangelist
Lol nope not yet seems like a good idea though ill do that right now
-
I would've asked "Why" but I'm worried about the answer...
Btw, are you sure it's the display - tried hooking it to external monitor/display?
-
The 360 won't work without a new BIOS supporting it. -

Don't the Asus cards use a reverse MXM though? So he could have damaged his motherboard I suppose
-
If its true I say goodjob for trying.
-
Wow this is just too funny, why would you even try to put that in a M15x? The gts is a GTSSS!!! Not a GTXX!! You always go for a GTX! lol Asus cards are always backwards anyway, change it back dude don't waste your time and destroy your precious motherboard.

did you put an asus "mxm" can into a real MXM slot?
-

Well i was bored had an extra g60 laying around and i wanted to see if the graphics card would work with the m15x lol. I can snap pictures for people who dont believe me, it's still apart sitting on my desk waiting to be reassembled. I'm going to try what Aikimox said tomorrow morning to see if it works. As for the 360m there's no way for it to work on the m15x without a bios update? i mean it does have the same pins and it fits perfectly into the spot. Sort of new to this whole MXM thing. What exactly does that imply?
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
The asus MXM cards have a different pinout compared to the real MXM cards right?
So maybe you shorted out your board by putting an ASUS card in there? -
GallardosEggrollshop Notebook Evangelist
oh that would make sense lol. well i guess i'll find out tomorrow
-
the card still works right?
-
Posting in a legendary thread.
I think after you work the LCD with the Dremel per Joker's suggestion, focus your Dremeling on the Battery to try and "jump start" The machine -
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
we should keep bumping this for a month. Maybe that wont be necesarry, you will probably be still working to resolve this in a month. I see you have a macbook pro and all so i hope money is no problem for you
-
one word : CRIPES
dremmeling a graphics card is not what I would call customization
save everyone the hassle , you cant fix this so just bin the m15x.
your warranty is now not worth the paper its written on
Or maybe you could show it on youtube being run over by your car -

lol the g60's motherboard was hosed so it was already ruined, plus i got it for free from work. the m15x is 3 years old so i dont see what the big deal is. the graphics card from the g60 still works, i put it in another g60 to test it out and it worked fine being dremmeled and all. im just gonna put it back together and see if it works again, if not then m15x is trashed doesnt matter, i'll just get a m11x and dremmel the out of that to try and jump start it when it's not coming on...
-
lol good stuff. -
GallardosEggrollshop Notebook Evangelist
well the m15x works fine lol with the old graphics card back in it. just thought id let everyone know, oh and the dremmeling the battery actually worked to start it. but seriously thanks to the only helpful person who replied to this thread, Aikimox. Thanks lol
-
lol this is the best tread ever, i was going to recommend duct tape and super glue for repairs, but glad to see you get it up and running again.
-
lol, I've seen worse in my past years as a tech working in a retail pc repair shop, such as hard drives epoxied upside down on power supplies to a hard drive "tray" made from large chunks of styrofoam being held together with sandwich bag twist ties to name a few.
Whatever works -
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
Well i didnt now how to help except tell you that it was a bad idea
Asus makes their cards so they an only be used on asus laptops. Glad you got it to work but you didnt seem to care anyway
-
LOL, +rep for effort!

lol yeah the m15x is 2 years old and it was really starting to show it's age i just wanted to see if i could put a better graphics card in it that i had around.. Good learning experience overall though :-D. This is what happens when your bored lol.

I do what i can when i can
-
I jest i jest....no. but really dont.
-
was hoping the m15x was fried so i could buy it from you and try to stick a micro atx board in it using double sided tape and rubber cement....=)

Any chance we get to see the photos of this legendary feat?

I'll post of pics of it later lol no pics of my alienware apart since I'm using it to post right now LOL. But I can snap some pics of the graphics card i dremmeled as well as a pic of the other ghetto things i've done to this m15x lol oh like dremmel the actually bottom case that cradled the wireless card, or how i cut the heat sink a little bit anyway pics will be posted soon lol.
-
You should offer the deremmel service to forum goers, they pay for postage in you pay to ship it back out with the new speed holes
-
I can see it now, new Thread "Bought a desktop 5970 to put in my new M17x-R2 had to dremel half the card away and my M17X wont boot up"
good effort. -
TBH, the issue probably isn't the dremmeling. I've cut PCB before to make something fit. No big deal as long if there aren't circuits. I've seen people do much crazier things with their machines.
It's as others have stated, different pinouts. That's where it fails. Although to a somewhat uneducated user, one would think that if it fits in the slot, it should work. Most PC components are keyed or slotted so you can't put something like a video card in the wrong slot. This is just a fail for the MXM standard. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The standard is fine, the fail is on Asus for locking down their stuff by making it proprietary
-
Yep, so pathetic when companies like Asus become MAC wannabes, lol. You can go proprietary if you're on top and have something others don't.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Well IIRC Asus does make the notebooks for Mac, guess they liked the idea lol

Man i will keep reading this thread for weeks to come. This and the dell repair movie really made my week.
-
Don't just read, Dremmel something! let's have some more fun!
-
I wish I had a dremmel. I'd figure out if I can put my T9300 from my Inspiron 1720 into my M11x
-
-
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
Sorry i have a dremmel fully loaded with lots of accesorys but nothing to dremmel. Unless i dremel my m17x to fit in my new desktop and hook up my GPUs to the desktop and use the screen as a fancontroller. It would be the m17x dockingstation
-
Lol, rgb-XPS
Nice one! ROFL.
+1 -
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
^^ Its RGP not RGB you screenaddict
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
OBVIOUSLY we need to dremel some phase change cooling into an M17x....
some people have NO imagination..... -
I think we are finished with this thread...
Long story short I dremmeled a graphics card to fit into a m15x
