I have had a 14" and a 13.3" screen. Going from 14 to 13.3 never bothered me. I am interested in the M11X however the only thing that has me wondering is the 11.6" screen. Will there be a big noticeable difference between 11.6 and 13.3 screen? I will be using this for as my main comp when traveling for a month at a time. I know I would get use to it after awhile however I have used a 10" net book and thought that was too small, however the difference between the 10-11.6 is close to same as 11.6-13.3 ?
-
Well its hard to say how it will effect you since no one got the M11x yet, however what will you u se ur M11x for? gaming or just surfing the net and watching movies?
from the videos i have seen on youtube, the screen size looks decent -
surfing and playing games...also games to my hd tv
-
hori, Mag compiled a bunch of video links on the M11x and Steve put together a bunch of other info as well. If you have not seen it, you can find it here in post#1:

Some of this may help in answering your questions. -
I have a HP mini 311 which is 11.6", and its not too bad. The M11x also has a HDMI, so you can connect it to your TV. Sure it'll be small, but hey, its a portable laptop.
-
So I was just curious what everyone thoughts was on gaming ( Heavy or Light ) on an 11.6' screen? Thanks.
-
Done it on an Acer 1410 and Toshiba T115D and not problem whatsoever.
-
I think the M11X is supposed to be hooked up to an external monitor for gaming reasons. I guess that's why they made it so portable. So you can take it to school/the office/whatever but still be able to game on it when you get home, where most of your gaming should take place anyways
-
I have no problems; and I have a 24" at home.
-
Boatloads of Timelines are selling with the same screen - this one gets powered by a sexy 335m GT though. I see no problem at all.
-
I think with gaming it depends on how you use your laptop. If you keep is close to you and use the keyboard with a mouse you'll be fine. If you're one of those people who push their laptops way back on their desks or if you want to use an external keyboard than you may have issues. And of course you have the option of plugging in an external monitor. I'm not sure that I'd want to run a 24" on this laptop, but I'm curious to see how well that would work.

Does anyone have any info on M11x display quality? RGB LED?
At least it must be better than M17x R1 -
can someone post the actual length and width of a 11.6" screen so I can make a template to see the actual size.
-
measure it yourself on a piece of paper and cut it out. its 11.6 diagonally. give or take just cut out 12''
-
I'm pretty sure your local .BestBuy would have some notebooks on display with a screen size close to that of the M11x. It might help you decide if the screen is right for you.
IMO since you travel a lot 11.6" is a good size. You could always hook it up to an external display or your TV when you want to watch movies, play games, etc. Good luck. -
You'd be surprised - I went the other day and found 10.1" inch, and 13.3" displays, but nothing inbetween. I went in just for that reason, and found nothing. It was kind of disappointing. :/
-
If you download the manual and change the size to 348%, page 26 with the screen will be about 11.6" diagonally. Unless it depends on your screen size, my screen is 1440x900.

I've got a 30" 2560x1600 monitor at home for my desktop, but have used my 10.1" netbook extensively for surfing the web and other menial tasks..
11.6" is actually an upgrade -
I think 11.6 is not that great should of been a tweleve, the way the bezel is, its like a 13.3 anyway adding some width to make it look better and a better viewing ability would be great, damn i wish they made rgb led for sub 16 inch machines!

Someone asked about m11x screen size. I had the same problem, went to best buy and they didn't have anything in that size (bunch of 10s though).
The best thing I found was this web: http://www.eeepc.it/monitor-dei-netbook-dimensioni-a-confronto/
It's in Italian but you can figure out screen dimensions for various sizes. For 11.6" they list: 257mm x 144mm. If you actually cut a piece of paper of those dimensions it looks pretty weird (seems pretty short!), at least compared to 13.3" I am using now and since I just replaced the screen the other day, and still have the old one out, I can give you the exact measures for 13.3" screen from Dell XPS m1330: 290mm x 182mm (viewable area). So basically like cutting ~35mm of each side of the 13.3" screen.
The width/height ratios don't seem that different (1.6 vs ~1.78) but the difference is quite noticeable.
Heh and I remember I thought 13.3" was too small when I was getting this laptop... -
I had a chance to use the M11x while visiting the Alienware office in Miami. The screen is very easy to use and it's fairly high quality. I have an M17x-R2 and I had no trouble adjusting to the 11.6" screen which surprised me.
-
Yeah, on pictures it doesn't look awkward, the best one I could find online was actually in the neighbouring "Fatboy something" thread from Rhodan:
Whats even more interesting, it's (m11x) dimensions don't seem that much different from XPS m1330and it actually weights a tiny bit more ...

I have an 11z here - (another 11.6" screen lappy by Dell). Basically, it's what I'd call a "netbook on steroids".
http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/inspiron-11z/pd.aspx?refid=inspiron-11z&s=dhs&cs=19&~ck=mn
The 11z, when closed, is literally slightly larger than the size of a sheet of paper (i.e. by a few millimeters around the entire sheet). So if you get 2 sheets of paper and lay them length-wise in front of you and "open" the top sheet - you'll get a feel for the form factor, assuming you haven't been able to find a 11z or Aspire Timeline 1410 (a little wider, but less depth in comparison) to compare to. From comparing the dimensions of the 11z versus the m11x - it appears that a) the m11x is obviously thicker, and b) it's a little deeper/longer (a good thing IMHO - I'll explain below).
Dell 11z measurements:
Width: 11.5" (292mm)
Height: 0.92" (23.5mm) front / 1.02" (25.8mm) back (with 3 cell battery)
Depth: 8.43" (214mm)
Weight: Starting weight of 3.05lbs (1.385kg)7 (3 cell battery). Weights will vary depending on configurations and manufacturing variability.
Alienware m11x measurements:
Width: 285.7mm (11.25 inches)
Height: 32.7mm (1.29 inches)
Depth: 233.3mm (9.19 inches)
Preliminary Weight: Start at 1.99kg (4.39 lbs)
Regarding the 11z:
The good:
- HD screen (1366x768). Compared to the 10/10v - the screen on the 11z is hands down 100% better (IMHO). It's bright / clear / brilliant - and without flaws from what I can tell. There are *some* slight contrast issues with the viewing angles (depending on how you adjust the screen forward/back to accomodate). However, compared to a 10/10v screen - it's still a major leap forward.
- "Perfect" step up from a mini 10/10v (which, has a very usable keyboard IMHO, however - I have large hands - so the 11z feels expansive compared to the 10v)
- Thinner than a 10/10v
- Weight is about the same - however - feels lighter than a 10/10v due to the distribution.
- Expandable to 4GB RAM / larger HD / better processors than the 10/10v.
The bad:
- Celeron 743 processor is somewhat anemic.
- Keyboard can be somewhat cramped for people with larger hands. Though you quickly get used to it.
- 3 cell battery lasts about the same as the 3 cell mini 10v. Which is fairly short (only about 3 hours). 6 cell would be an option - however the battery would "stick out" - which I'm not a fan of.
- Touchpad is an ElanTech pad (not Synaptics) - driver support is somewhat flaky. Default drivers with Win7 are the best and fairly usable. However, the touchpad is somewhat sensitive and flush with the palmrest which leads to:
- My main complaint is that there is a mix of the touchpad being a little "too" wide and the palmrest not being deep enough. Again, I have large hands - thus - when I type - I tend to accidentally brush my palm on the touchpad, subsequently moving the mouse / clicking areas by accident.
From what I can tell in the videos / pictures - they've extended the palmrest area / deepened the unit, which is supported by the measurements above - by what appears to be close to a full 3/4 inch. The keyboard, other than the inability to light the keys up, appears to be the same size on the 11z compared to the m11x. I'd expect the keys to be a little deeper overall - to enhance typing a little - though I doubt seriously the keyboard is any wider.
I've stated before that the 11z is what I'd call an ideal form factor. While the 10/10v (or any netbook for that matter) are certainly nice laptops - they're still somewhat small / lacking in power for my personal tastes (11z is really my daughter's laptop for middle school). The m11x actually addresses all of my concerns/issues with the 11z:
- Deeper overall - appears to have deeper palmrest(s) / slightly smaller touchpad made by Synaptics.
- Expandle to 8 GB RAM
- Higher end processor available
- Higher end GPU available / swappable graphics (11z also has the same 4500MHD)
- 8 cell battery / flush, contained within the unit (nothing "sticks" out).
- Faster Hard Drive options.
Hope all of this helps - basically - in short - no - the screen shouldn't be a problem. It's a little "small" at first - but you quickly become accustomed to it and compared to the 10/10v - it's quite a jump. -
What could I use to compare the screensize of an m11x ? im interested in buying these and making it my primary machine for all use. What does the screen size compare to?
Examples please? such as like a piece of paper or something? -

Will give you 2D and 3D representation, although 3D isn't that great. -
Thanks. Now that I have both 13.3" and 11.6" I can tell you exactly the easiest way to compare.
Take a screenshot of what you want to see (Print Screen), then paste it into Paint. Click on Resize button (it's on Home tab), then set both horizontal and vertical to 87 % (11.6/13.3 = 0.87) of the original. This is a very good approximation of the screen size. The text is a bit sharper of course, but the scaling is pretty good as far as I can tell. I got used to it pretty fast, but now every time I do something on 13.3" it looks gigantic. -
Love mine. Use it for everything from web/email, light gaming (tf2, portal, painkiller), photoshop and light web design etc etc.
It's a great laptop for people who have a desktop or a larger desktop replacement notebook. -
sometimes when I'm tired playing strategy games on the machine is hard because of the size of the screen, but its still better than lugging a m15x around.
-
At first I was told it would be too small for gaming. I actually game on a 24inch dell monitor and a 40 inch HDTV. It is perfect for laptop gaming. I played SC2, Left 4 dead 2, battlefield bc2, battlefield 2. All very playable and enjoyable on the screen.
-
I personally found the screen too small for gaming on many games especially on RTS games. Not so much of a problem on FPS titles. The glare is terrible as well. Personally I think Dell should/could have put a 12.1" in this form factor. I mean the m11x almost has a 13" laptop footprint and weight.
-
i play codmw2, mass effect 2, and gears on mine and i've gotten used to the size very quickly. i had a 14.1 before this 11.6 but honestly it's not bad. @Sanmanatoo i agree, FPS is good, but any RTS i've needed to plug in another monitor to use. i have a 22" samsung monitor on my desk for movies and games and stuff.
M11X 11.6" screen too small or ok?
