    Should I get an M11x R3 (with 8gb of ram, i7 2617M, 2gb gt 540m, SSD) or a M14x (i7 2720QM, 750gb SATA, 8gb Ram, 3gb GT 555M)?

    lol, thats such a broad question. i mean i need to ask, what do you need a laptop for in the first place? will you be carrying it around more? or will it stay on your desk? do you game alot and moreover, do you play games that need a top of the line graphics card?/ or use programs that demand alot from your computer?

    its all about what you want and what you will be using it for.

    m14x if you want more power...
    m11x if you want more portability...

    Your right, let me be more specific:

    I'm going to use it for gaming and work. It needs to be portable. That's why the M15x is out of the question. I game a lot, and I intend to play games like Battlefield BC2, Mass Effect 1,2, and 3 (when it comes out), SC2, Oblivion and Skyrim (when it comes out). Half Life 3 (if it ever is announced), Medieval Total War, etc. etc. The M11x is much more portable and gets better battery life but it has a tiny screen that reflects horribly outdoors. The M14x is larger and has worse battery life but has a larger screen. I'm not sure if it's that much more powerful than then M11x. I could use some advice concerning that. Would the M11x with the SSD stay cooler? Which one would be louder? Actually, I could use any advice... I'm very indecisive.

    It is. m11x has a weak cpu. There is no point of comparison with the m14x one...

    NVidia GT555m is considerably better than 540m...

    And a lot of other factors...

    m14x all the way. It's only like 2 pounds heavier than the m11x, but has a REAL sandy bridge processor, better screen, and better gpu by far. Yes it's battery life is a lil lacking, but you can always plug it in or buy a spare battery.

    m11x won't be able to game properly, and considering how close their prices are, I would just go with the m14x.

    All that's turning me off is the reports of overheating and the loud fan noise (even when the comp is idle). I don't want it making noise while I'm in class.

    I ordered an M11x R2 (fully maxed out with SSD and the lot) a few weeks ago. It's supposed to arrive tomorrow. I contacted Dell and they said I can return it if I wish. Would there be any advantage in keeping it instead of returning it and getting an M11x R3 or M14x?

    If portability isn't a big issue get the M14x. Oh, 3GB GT555? Unless it's a free upgrade, stick with 1.5GB.

    The uncomfortable high temps, buzzing loud fans and the keyboard spring issue horrors of the m14x from that one review is worrying me. What is your opinion about that guys? Take a chance @ m14x or what?

    My opinion, the review unit was just that - a review unit. The review was done pre-launch and IMO it was a pre-release unit. Take the review with a grain of salt concerning temps, fans, etc. As most are aware, these types of items are easily resolved with a BIOS change, etc.

    In the end it comes down to size. If you want a larger unit, the 14x. If you want a smaller unit, 11x.

    Also check what games you will be playing. If all you want is WoW on the go, get the M11x for example.

    If you want to try Crysis 2 and whatnot, obviously get the m14x

    I had a 12" "netbook" (more like ultraportable) a year ago and liked the size. That being said, my girlfriend's Samsung is 14" and is a really decent size. It's not too small, not too big. The screen also looks sharp.

    You're going to have a lot more power out of the 2720QM than the 2617M, and the GT 555m is quite a bit faster than the 540m, also, so I'd recommend the M14x unless you absolutely have to have the smaller of the two systems.

    That said, it's all preference. I'd say go to your local Best Buy and compare a 14" with a netbook, but the M11x and M14x are way thicker/bigger than the same size system from another company.

    I have a m11x now, and my last laptop was a Sony with 14" 1600x900 screen.

    I'd definitely get the M14x, 11.6 is a wee bit small.

    Thanks for your input, Batboy :)! That's comforting to know as I've been seeing alot of people freaking out about the "fan/heat issue" and paranoia started to become contagious :p

    Next week it's order time!

    i personally would go for 11X R3 with the SSD, hands down, any gaming laptop without an SSD nowadays are just lame

    now my true question is this, you have worry over the outdoor use?

    do you really play games outisde of your house/work? do you go to the open park to play games? because it is very unlikely, right?

    also, 540m and i7 2617M are way more than enough to play any upcoming games years to come, i dont have a solid of my own proof for this, but i usually just look at reviews on notebookcheck.net

    You do get a faster system and a comfortably-bigger screen with the M14x. They both have enough gaming muscle for just about anything, so it comes down to form factor. Neither system is thin-and-light, so the smaller dimensions and lighter weight of the M11x are very noticeable. The M14x is the better choice if you're going to mainly use it at your desk and take it with you every once in a while due to its size being more comfortable and its superior performance.

    Or m11x r3 + External Monitor/Keyboard for about $250 for use on desk. Then unplugged m11x r3 from monitor/keyboard on the go, much for portable/lighter this way than lugging a 6.5lb machine.

    4GB = Gaming
    6GB = Electronic Music Production
    8GB = 3D/Maya/Heavy Adobe

    As for the laptop choice, ask yourself this: Will you be in regular situations where you'd have to play/work on the M11X for over 1 hour outside of your residents without access to an external monitor/tv? If so, the M14X is for you; if not, the M11X is for you.

    Why I say this is after 1 hour of usage, the screen size starts to get to you if you're working with documents/media applications, etc. If you do choose the M14X, get the 900p screen upgrade too. :)

    4GB is all you need for gaming.

    The 2GB/3GB video card upgrades on both units are a rip off and deceive users with limited tech knowledge. It doesn't really increase gaming performance, so keep either of those options at a stock level. It's a cash-grab/deceitful tactic used by Dell/AW in order to squeeze you for every penny.

    ... are you guys talking about??

    why on earth would you be talking about system memory in relation to graphic cards?

    2/3GB cards are for gaming at higher resolutions but i'm not sure the 555m can comfortably game at 1080p+

    i agree ^^ thinkin the OP might be a bit confused on the difference.

    i also agree that 4gb of the 1600mhz ram is plenty.

    and the 1gb 555m graphics is fine.

    If u wan portability, m11x. Preferably for microsoft office or for office use.
    If u wan game comfortably, m14x. Might be much heavier, Poor battery life. Make use of nvidia optimus as much as u can.

    m11x too small to game.
