I am looking into buying either the M11x or the M15x. i am leaning more towards the m11x but I am wundering if it will be able to play the new games in a couple of years beacuse i plan on haveing it for a while.
i currently have a Dell vostro buissnes laptop so anything is a step up.
please help.
-
Nobody has any idea what requirements games will have in a couple of years however the M15X is definitely more futureproof. If you've got the money to burn get the M15X at the best spec you can.
-
your cant really compare the systems.
M11x for the moving gamer,
M15x for the no moving gamer
which are you? -
-
also can i up grade the m11x porcessor and graphics card later on beyond the best that i comes with. later on?
-
these are all laptops, so any of these can play games on the go. but if you plan on doing real work with your laptop, i suggest getting the M15x or M17x. also the M11x is not upgradable.
-
-
yes M15x and M17x are upgradable to a certain extent. but overall will last you longer with out any upgrades. what do you use the laptop for?
-
-
in the end it your choice, go over to the owners lounge for both laptops and read up on them. they are both nice systems but each one has its drawbacks. what is more important to you performance or mobility.
-
lol M17X and m11x combo.... happiest camper in the world with that. Once I get my replacement 17X......
-
I would personally choose the m11x if you move a lot. And it can be upgraded slightly with more Memory and a new hard drive. I don't know about the processor.
The thing is heavy already, can't imagine how heavy the m15x must be. I do some work on my m11x, I run 3D Studio Max, Photoshop, Illustrator and a bunch of other stuff on it as well.
To each their own I guess. I wouldn't expect upgradability from a laptop to begin with. -
Honestly I would suggest going to a area-51 m15x. It's quite portable and quite strong, and you should be able to get a Great price on it especially considering that everyone is upgrading. And i know what you're thinking it's got old school components. But I think they're quite strong for a casual gamer, I mean an x9000, and a 9800 GT, and 4 gigs of dd2 ram for under a grand is a great setup IMO.
-
I would highly recommend going with the m11x.
Look at it this way. You can play any game on the market, now, for $1,000. In two years, you throw it away / sell it and buy another $1,000 laptop that can play any game on the market two years from now.
Or, you spend $2,000 now and you'll own a laptop for four years that can't even play DX 11 games.
It very rarely pays to buy a high end laptop. Get the M11x and be happy knowing that you can upgrade in a few years without a guilty conscience. -
There is no middle ground for me (as you can tell from my sig). I would only chose between the M11x or M17x. The M15x is not really that much smaller than the 17" anyway.

Unless you have a normal gaming rig to use for your major gaming, I would get the M15x, the M11x isn't intended to be a sole video game playing machine.
-
GO for M15x, it is upgradable as others said. 1080p, blazing fast procs compared with M11x!, upgradable GPU (possibly to 5870, DX11!), bluray movie, external display without any problems (think projector, or big screen gaming wherever you are at). And I'm assuming when you say you might travel alot, you mean staying at hotel or something like that is when you game, right? so get M15x! or you mean you want to play on the plane (train, and automobile?
) (just sleep! haha) You say you are between heavy and casual gamer, go for M15x, it can basically do ANYTHING. Good luck with your choice!

Also consider the size factor.. if u are goin to take ur laptop to ur work.. then u shud think twice to get m15x as its quiet bulky (huge for a 15")
But if u just use it in home.. then its perfect.
Also I agree with IRsmurf. Dont expect a lot for the future... One moment i7 is in its peek and then,, some new i9 comes just after u buy it.. what u gonna do then?
Just sketch out ur preferences and go accordingly. Also theres some trotted issues with new processors..so just so check before u order 1.
My only concern with m15x is its size.. i cant more around all day with tht gaint in my bagpack. -

Actually, the m15x is the greatest laptop I have ever seen/owned. but yes, the fact that the hinge WILL consistently break no matter what makes it a bad investment.
I will be getting it back from AW this Wednesday, They are fixing the hinge crack for the second time. -
I don't mind paying 50-75 dollars for the hinge from time to time and replacing it myself if it comes down to it. Form factors like those don't really bother me because I'm still doing well in the size factor as my m15x is probably still the most powerful laptop of that size, combined with a 260m. from MXM 2.1
-
i cant imagine deciding to buy a 11x over a 15x. its just ridiculous to me. the 15x weighs like 10-11lbs. if you cant move it around without issues, then ...well you have other issues and probably dont need to be gaming in the first place. m11x is a novelty item that will be flooding the marketplace in a few months when everyone gets sick of playing games @ 25 fps. just my 2 pennies but i would get the 15x without hesitation, or buy an m11x and trade it to the guy in the marketplace for his awesome sony that is no good cause it only gets 3-4 hours battery =)
-
The M11x isn't meant to be a person's main gaming machine. And if it is, they should not hope that it runs games 2 years down the line too well.
The processor on it now is a huge botteneck. MASSIVE bottleneck. Current games play well on it in a mix of high and medium settings for an average of 25-40 fps (depending on what game you are looking at). These are current games. In 2 years, games will require more than what the current processor can handle and you will have to stick to low settings to be playable.
Plus the CPU and GPU is non-upgradeable. Both are soldered in.
To sum it all up. The M11x is more of a short term investment then a longterm. For what it is though, it is great. It is playing games that just came out extremely well. Just don't expect to keep medium/high settings at 30 fps in 2 years. -
-
When I heard that this machine could handle Empire TW at medium (slightly higer maybe) settings I was surprised.

Really the GPU is great, but the CPU is completely lacking. Perhaps mine is a bit slower as a result of the OC issue though.
-
-
but again, it all comes down to what you really want in a system, what you can afford, and what may be more beneficial to you in the future. good luck!

Just a note, I am talking about an M15x, not an m15x ; )

As far as portability goes, get a good backpack and the M15x is just fine to lug around imo. However, if you are playing on your lap all the time, the m11x wins out. I love my M15x, take with me every day to work and play on lunch and breaks, it still runs as fast as the day i got it, runs all games I've thrown at it max settings, max res.

So I purchased the m11x with the core2duo around 9 months ago. I've been using it for both work and gaming. I like it because it is light enough to carry around on a business trip (I travel alot) and I can use it to play games when I'm stuck in a hotel.
Now I have a 8 year old boy who really loves playing online games like wizard101 and club penguin. He wants his own laptop. So I'm buying the computer that I really wanted for myself in the first place - the m15x - and I'm going to give him the m11x.
I just ordered the m15x with the i7 and the 460 1.5gb nvidia card and 6gb of ram.
As for gaming on the m11x, I play battlefield 2 very easily at high settings (40-50fps) . Battlefield Bad Company 2 is not really playable at all (20 or so fps at lowest setting), even at the lowest setting it is very jumpy and I get bested all the time. Medal of Honor (the new version) runs surprisingly well but at the lowest settings.
Overall the m11x is a decent machine. It will run most applications you want-even video editing and graphical editing programs. I have CS3 running on it with no difficulties at all. I'm really looking forward to seeing the difference with the m15x and the i7 (maybe next week).
Oh and one other thing, I was very seriously considering the new i7 version of the m11x with 8gb of ram and a ssd, but I decided to stick with the m15x. There were no price breaks for that configuration and was actually priced higher than the m15x I ordered. I am wondering if that machine would be the best of both worlds (over $2500).

I returned my M11xR2 with 8GB ram and the highest processor.
The (2) reason was because of the small screen with glare and that nvidia has yet to release a good driver that works with punkbuster. What's the point of having a laptop if you keep getting kick of multiplayer games.
I ordered a new m15x with ATI 5850 @ a great deal and the bonus is that I can upgrade the CPU and GPU @ anytime. -
Sounds like a good call. -
My M11X R1 has served me well on this 4 month Temp Duty Assignment, however I wish I had made the choice to bring my M15X instead as I continually find myself doing some rather intensive projects and putting my M11X to the test.
-
im just wondering what is better to get i have a budget of 1200 and i have been looking at the the stock m15x or an upgraded m11x but dont really no which is the better option
-
I need help deciding here. I am trying to decide between the M11x or M15x as well. I already own a Area 51 ALX and a m15x from 2009. I am a student so I appreciate portability and battery life, but my keyboard has to be comfortable to work with considering how much work I do in MS Word and Excel. I dont really have a need to play games on the go so having said all of that you think the answer would be obvious, but the price breaks on the M15x are SO tempting. Here are the options:
Option #1:
M15x
Core i7 840QM @ 3.2Ghz Turbo
6GB RAM
1080P Screen
1GB ATI Mobility HD 5850
256GB Samsung SSD
Windows 7 Ultimate
Total:2500
Option #2
M11x
Core i7 640UM @2.266 Turbo
4GB RAM
720p Screen
Nvidia 335M
256GB Samsung SSD
Windows 7 Ultimate
Total:1800
I would appreciate everyones input! -
get the m15x if the money isnt a prolem
-
I'm cancelling my M15x order right now. Especially with my constant coast to coast flights battery life and portability was enough to convince me to go for the M11x. I will post on here once I receive it whether I like it or not. The M15x seriously needs some more battery life plus I already own an m15x. Money wasnt an issue, I almost went for a Sony Vaio z, but as always Alienware treated me well so they got my business.
-
I say get the M11X, since you already have an M15X from 2009. I've been rocking my M11X(R1) since I bought it right after they came out and it's been a real blessing carrying it around everywhere.
*EDIT* Ooops! I see you just posted. -
I would only get the m11x if they fix their hinge error. Until then, m15x.
-
wait for the M15x R3 !!!

http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...11x-have-hinges-damaged-repaired-already.html
The hinge issue that caused me to have to get my m11x replaced after four months and my second one swapped for an m15x after two months. This hinge issue is due to faulty design, which the m15x does NOT have - you see, the m15x has been out longer and has not had nearly as many errors as far as it is concerned.
Pretty much, due to the way the hinges are designed - metal screwing into plastic the way it is - it is far more likely for an m11x to have its hinge break open than it is for an m15x to have the same problem. THAT hinge issue. -
It's a very very tricky question. I love my M15x and bought the M11x as a second computer (mainly for travel and to reduce spousal abandonment syndrome as I tend to use the M15 on the desk in my office rather than my lap).
If you need battery life and portability, you can't beat the M11. If you want power but without the bulk of the larger M17, then you can't beat the M15x. I'm only selling mine because I've decided I might as well go get a desktop since I never move the M15x. -
Mine has never had an issue with the hinges, and I'm going on over 10 months ownership...
M11x or M15x?
