Alienware M11x user here, just got mine two days ago.

Runs like a dream... first game I tried was Stalker Call of Pripyat, ran it at max setting with smooth framerate... yes.. wow

However, why I tried plugging it in via hdmi to my 42" hdtv I had MASSIVE slowdown accross the board. Hd movies still play great but games like l4d or stalker need to have their setting halved!

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some setting I can change to improve performance?

It's a 1080p screen but i set the resolution to 1366x768 once I connected figuring that would give me similar performance to when I use the computer separately.. I also have the computer only displaying on the one monitor meaning the m11x's screen is black. Is it normal to have such a drop in performance?

Load times were 10 times as long... framerate was choppy etc...

Something to think about if you plan on using this alot with an external monitor...

How can my ps3 be so fast over hdmi but this thing loses performance?

    HELP !!!! lol

this shouldnt happen at all. as long as you are using all the same settings and resolution you should get the exact same performance as on your laptop. maybe you're in power saver?
my m11x plays just fine on my 1080p tv using hdmi.

user just need to be educated. I play bc2 on my 42" just fine, dont expect that games will run on high at 1080p resolution, reduce to 720p and you will be ok

Because the resolution is MUCH larger on the TV over 1080P than the 720P LCD on the notebook. That's how games achieve the speed they do on the M11x, because of its native resolution.

Again, please read the original post, he clearly stated he was running 720p on a 1080p panel, performance should be the same regardless of the size of the tv.

I haven't tried the hdmi out on my m11x yet but I can check once I get home

    Cheers

I misread the post, but now I see it. Anyway, I do not have the issue when I played BC2, so it's most likely his settings, if he can play these games on a laptop screen then there is no reason why he can't play them with hdmi out. I did notice one thing though, that HDMI out will not work on integrated graphics cards, so I would check to make sure you notebook is indeed running in nvidia.

Btw, mine runs fine at 1080p in windows desktop, when launch game resolution readjust to game settings (720p), so that's really shouldn't be an issue

actually, i just realized I had 150% magnification or whatever on to make icons and text etc.. bigger on my desktop, maybe that had something to do with it..

perhaps there are some power saver settings messed-up, maybe it was just that particular game?

i did notice that stalker kept starting up in this weird squarish low res window but under options it said it was 1366x768... but the i switched it to like 1280etc.. and it went back to fullscreen and then i could switch it back to 1366... it was weird, when i get off work i'll try more games that should be done by now and try to be more careful..

magnification has nothing to do I am set at 125%.

Although I did notice one thing that games ran choppy on battery power, so, it's most likely your issue. Either some power saving enabled or you are running on battery.

The reason I asked that is because sometimes just the scaling up could hurt performance...
