    Okay guys,

Here is another question for the masses. I play World of Warcraft for now (until Age of Conan or Warhammer comes out). Well to make a long story short I finally installed the game today and started playing it on the new laptop. Here is my dilemma..

When I hook the laptop up to my monitor via the HDMI port I only have a 20-40 fps...

but when I don't use an external monitor I have 100+ fps....

is there something I'm doing wrong or is this standard? Perhaps it switches from the 8800 to the crappy one? If this is so how do I prevent it?

Enquiring minds want to know :)

What method are you using to enable the external display?

on my desktop, i have an 8600 GT (256MB GDDR3) on a dual-out (twinview) attached to 2xVGA CRTs (the old d-sub 25pin connectors)... the framrate is about half that of the 8700M GT in my m15x... and my m15x is a solo display at 1920x1200, desktop, dual 1600x1200.

both computers have detail settings fairly high.

no noticable lag on the laptop, but there is noticable lag occasionally on the desktop.

point being, dual-monitors slows performance. so if you're using the wrong method to switch to the external screen, you can easily end up with the video card duplicating the signal and undergoing repeat renderings for the same output (on different displays)... however, using correct methods, you can switch from one to the other without loss of performance.

Go to the Nvidia control panel and go to the manage 3D settings option, then click the "Use the advanced 3D image settings" radio button and click the "Take me there" link at the right.

On the Manage 3D Settings - Global Settings tab look the Multi-display/Mixed-GPU Acceleration option and select the Single Display Peformance Mode.

(I've used the spanish version of the control panel to do this but you should be able to find your way in the english version)

I've had problems with my dual screen setup as well. It seems that with the default multiple screen option the card updates the screens as one big screen. By selecting this option I am able to play games or run 3D applications a lot faster as it seems to be updating the screens separately instead of both of them as one large screen.

(My 3D mark scores jumped from around the 9000's all the way to the 15,000's!!!

    Card: desktop NV8600 GT 512MB DDR3)

Try the settings I describe here and see if they help. Let us know how it goes.

    Moidock,

I think you might be right. I have to run and do a few errands then I'll give this a try. I was using the set up multiple display and singing it to the to the single display. I'll see if the 3d setting option boosts the performance and let you all know.

    Quick Update!

    Moidock,

You hit the nail on the head. That was definitely the issue. Sneaky little setting they hide in that list of options.

    Thanks

    Something is still off...

I did the single performance and when I play wow with the external monitor I can get anywhere between 40-80 fps when not in a major city or flying...

When in a major city/flying it drops to 14-30 fps. This is with all setting turned down and at 1920 X1200

Is this normal performance or am I overlooking something?

3DMark06, I presume? If so, yeah, that's abnormally low.

Stupid verification questions: you've made sure you're running the 8800M GTX and not the integrated Intel GPU, yes? And you ran 3DMark06 on the default 1280x1024?

@Sogarth, there is no way the integrated gpu can get 3512 in 3dmark06

This sounds kinda like what rEvErSeDaMaGe was going through.. Then he just randomly posted saying he had fixed it.. Wonder what his problem was and how he fixed it..
Oh and Wanks what you're talking about is BinaryGFX, not Stealth Mode. The latter slows down your fans and underclocks your GPU.. I forgot what's the notification if you're in Stealth mode.. A little blue rectangle in your System tray I think..

More dumb questions - you're plugged in, right? Also, check your power profile to be sure its not set to Power Saver.

Push the stealth button. If its on, the OSD will be lit and the button itself will be brighter than when it is off.

    Ummmmm...yeah.....How about those TPS reports?

You know guys, I always had a problem that when I received a brand new toy I would never ever read the instructions. I guess it an issue with us guys. Well long story short. I just opened them up and figure out what the stealth button was...and guess what? It is lit up on the keyboard. So I'm figuring that it is indeed on especially since it is lit up. All this time I just thought that was a nice little speedometer. I'm stuck at work till later today but once I get home I will confirm that this is the issue (which I'm 99% sure it is right now...I mean if something is on then it lights up right??? Off means that it isn't lit...oh well I feel like such a noob....)

Did you check the stealth mode? it's the button on top of the keyboard that looks like a tachometer/speedo next to the space ship. If is lit up then it's on... I pretty sure my arrived with it turned on. I just need to confirm it once I get home.

    Try this sequence

    1) Touch the stealth mode button for 3 sec, It should light up. Now touch another 3 sec to make it off. If its not responding, press FN F1 suspend and then resume again. Now try again. This is to make sure ur out of stealth mode. Light should be dimmer that your wifi light.

    2) Turn off intergrated graphics. Press FN F7, Sometimes its hard to tell if its using intergrated or 8800GTX. Make sure its using GTX8800. I normally will restart 2 times just to make sure i am in GTX 8800.

    3) Go to the power icon on task bar and make sure its high performance. U might wanna go to advance tab just to make sure CPU and GPU power is on high 100%. This is to make sure the CS did not change it while inspecting your system (**** happens).

    4) Be sure to plug in power.

    5) Off every program & run 3dmark 06. My score is 9700 marks.

    6) close your eyes and pray now. :)

    Oh yeah!

Benchmark 9638! It was in stealth mode. It would be nice to be able to see the GFX or Stealth mode a little easier. The button stays lit up but I guess either I accidentally swiped it or it was ship to me that way. Either way it's rocking now :)

Thank to all that help me figure this crap out.
