I talked to a dell representative today because I've been looking at the Alienware m15x for a while and wanted it but couldn't find a lot of information about the new models. I asked her about the battery life and she said that it should last 4-5 hours with the laptop in stealth mode and the 9 cell battery. I figured I'd come here to see if she was telling the truth or if she just wanted me to buy one of their laptops.

well this wouldn't be playing games and it would be using Microsoft Office during a college class, how long would you say it would last?

with the 9 cell and LCD on lowest, and wireless off, and blutooth off, and everything you would be lucky to get 3 hours.. with the 1gb video card with the 512 u should get even more

Unfortunately this is not a laptop that will be known for having really good battery life. What you are paying for is the parts inside and the subsequent performance. With better parts you'll need more power and so I suggest you keep that power brick with you when traveling about.

I'm sure itll suck carrying this to all my classes but at least I'll have the coolest laptop on campus?

I've always wondered why battery life is so crucial to people with such a laptop. The thing is, battery life for me is now pretty much useless, since wherever I go, I end up taking my laptop charger anyways, and most people do it as well regardless of the laptop. So in the end it doesn't really make a massive difference on how long the battery lasts. Granted the battery DOES matter when you're on a long bus, train ride, or in a lecture. And even then, 1.5 hours is usually enough for me...

More than the battery now, what matters more to me is the size of the AC adaptor, since i find the extra space and weight from the charger is more important. I'd rather have a 1 hour battery life and a mini charger than a 3 hour battery life and a massive charger. Unfortunately with the M15x you'll get the massive charger and also a small battery life. But who cares!

    just my view...

Alright then, I'm most concerned about using this in a lecture environment or class because I have a computer intensive major and was figuring that I would need a longer battery life for this, any college students who could tell me just how well one of these works for college.

Just got mine today. I depleted the battery straight out of the box took about 2.5 hours. The battery started at ~85%

I was installing stuff, browsing internet. I had it on power saving for the first hour before I realized it was taking too long to deplete then switched to Balanced. Screen brightness was at 2 notches most of the time.

I have a feeling I'll be able to get ~3-3.5 hours out of this thing fully charged.

as a programming student, i try to sit next to an outlet and bring a powerbar and extension cord to every class. its not much of a hassle.

then again, i'm not one of those people too afraid to carry 9lbs+ of gear.

weight isn't much of a concern of mine since I have a nice laptop backpack to go with this and that makes a world of difference whenever you have to carry around 10 or more pounds
