I know most of you have the M15X for gaming essentially, but what is it like for normal use, i.e. DTP/Word processing/Internet/Video playing editing?
I don't play games on my laptop so is the AW over egged for my use? would I be better with, say a XPS 1530?
(I just like the lights and different look of the AW)

you're probably better off with the m1530, yeah. the biggest advantage of the m15x is the 8800m-gtx, and if you're not a gamer, you won't need it.

or with HP dv5t.

It can do all those things well, you just wouldn't be getting all of your money's worth if you don't game. Though, you don't have to get the 8800M GTX in that case.
So, it could still be an option.

The m15x for normal usage is completely unjustified... There is no reason to get a laptop like this if you are only going to use it for normal word processing and browsing the internet.
There are FAR BETTER (but by far I mean... extraordinarily far) better choices out there, much cheaper and with much better quality. -
Obvious question, are you a rich boy ?
or better are you ready to pay little extra for the looks and 'hey whats that' question from your friends ?
Most of the times I have Visual Studio and Multiple VPCs opened on my m15x and it rocks. I am not hardcore gamer but love playing crysis, orangebox, timeshift and simulation games like FlightSimulatorX , NFS (ok too many games to call my self casual gamer) and 8700 is good enough for that.
I spent that money on 4gb upgrade and 500gbx2 hard disks. soon will upgrade to 8gb RAM -
8gb RAM sounds good, but i don't think you'll even be able to fully load 8gb with DDR2 (667mhz) speeds...
-
You can... see one of my colleague used it on his lenovo t61p with same chipset
http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs...-lenovo-thinkpad-t61p-now-has-8gb-of-ram.aspx -
i know you can physically use them, but i'm wondering if you can "fill" 8gb of RAM over 667mhz speeds...
