did you uninstall the original synaptic driver for the touchpad? i think alien touch only work with the original synaptic touch pad driver.

    ok I will check that
After the initial install would not allow Touch to work I removed CC completely, rebooted and ran CrapCleaner's registry clean and then did a clean install of the new CC: everything works fine except the Touch.
Will now go and see which driver I have for the touchpad as per the suggestion from InappropraiateName
I have the Synaptics driver installed

I hear what you are saying but it bugs me more to have features in the machine that are supposed to function not work when they should -- anyways folowed your advice, downloaded the latest synaptics driver from the Dell site and re-installed the driver -- all works fine now.
My call would be is it is more of a registry conflict that re-installation and re-booting gets squared away, but if it can save the next person some angst, here's what to do:
download the new version of CC
try to install as an update
    if it works, great
if not, uninstall, run crapcleaner registry clean, reinstall CC and ensure you have the latest sysnaptics driver installed.
    re-boot and all is well

CC has a new interface, revised look and uses a colour wheel now.

In my opinion, useless features (as in useless to me) can be as buggy as hell. I just enjoy the machine. If a feature I don't use doesn't work so well I really don't mind..

Obviously if you really like the feature that is not working it must be annoying, but there are other 3rd party apps that do the job. Personally I try not to get annoyed by things like that.
