I know that the graphics card in my M15x due to arrive soon is compatible with Nvidia's 3D graphics drivers but I'm wondering if it's possible or plausible to use cheap colour tinted 3d glasses to make use of the 3d effect, or if it is only worth the experience using the official Nvidia 3d glasses on a 120hz display.

Also if it is worth the look with the cheap glasses: which type of glasses work with the drivers.. red and cyan or red and blue?

I'd hope their method of 3d is not the 1950s style, but that would mean you are out of luck.

I'm pretty certain the Nvidia 3D is stereoscopic. So, on your 120 Hz display, you have two 60 Hz videos interlaced, one for the left eye and one for the right. Then the glasses have one lens blacked out at a time, and synced up with the display; when the right lens is blacked out, the left image is showing, then the reverse for the right image. 60 Hz is fast enough (most of the time) for your brain to be fooled into seeing it as one image, and then reconstructing the separate left and right video into 3D.

A couple of thoughts: Actually 85Hz is accepted as the minimum to be readily convincing. I personally love 120-150Hz screens - if your game can run at that speed it really does add to the realism level and suspension of disbelief.

Some games or visualisation tools look better with a lower res and higher refresh rate. If you have a CRT monitor, try 800x600x120Hz just for the fun. Your winamp Vis will look great!

I imagine that you could use the Cyan/Red stereo effect for games, It would be easy enough to knock up a demo using a 3D package. But I'm tempted to think that it would look crappy and would be cool only for a few minutes.

Nvidia do use the shutter glasses method running at 120hz alternating frames form eye to eye @ 60hz an eye, I've tried both methods and to me the 3D Vision is an entire league better then Red/Blue method that they also support (3D Vision Discover)

It's possible to use the 3D Vision Discover on pretty much any setup, as i've had it running on my M17x, However everything becomes monotone and the colours tend to bleed occasionally making it look crap (For lack of of a better word).

3D Vision NEEDs a high refresh rate LCD (as said above minimum of 85hz) but looks substantially better then the Red/Blue version.

P.S - Support for games is lacking a bit, Some games tend to work alot better then others due to menus and 2D overlays etc, but when it works well, It's awesome.
Also it requires you use the DVI cable that comes with the monitor and I'm not sure if the DisplayPort -> DVI adapter would work correctly.

Can you have the same effect with one of the Avatar 3d glasses? I got those at home lol
