The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I wonder what kind of user these configurations are targeting. It seems odd that a user would be drawn to the M15x and then find an I3-330M adequate for his uses. And then add a 260M?
-
i think they just try to keep the base price as low as possible. Why would you ever want such a huge laptop with a i3-330M and a 240M
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Its a good base price, but not a good choice. When you add options, price will be up there.
As for EPP, they discount the notebook , but the options are still at full price. Whats up with that? I believe this a sign for new EPP discount, where they discount the notebook , but not the options. boo dell !! -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
It's the most reasonable explanation. -

Yeah! They just put the i3 in to make the laptop "looks" more affordable. People will be excited and when they configure the options they will have this thinking in mind: "come on, just $200 more makes my lappy totally different..." Thing is they will not realize how far the price goes up before they added about 5-6 differences to their lappy.
-
Yeah with the recent discounts i was hoping for a substantial upgrade... maybe they'll tweak it bit by bit?
-
+1
Who would have a Alienware that wont be an official beast? I'm a little sad, the cheaper it goes, the less I look with my M15x
Alienware is supposed to be all about high end performance and gaming experience, would would anyone buy the i3? -
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
I don't know I like it or not... When Alienware now offers i3 and makes 11" laptops. I mean it's not bad at all... but it's something not so Alienwared...
In the long run tho, I believe consumers are who benefit from this "lower standard" trend... maybe not. -
I hate to say it but there hasn't been a true Alienware in the sense you're talking about since Dell bought them out.
More and more people are catching on now that Alienware = Dell, and even a well-configured Alienware is still an expensive Dell.
Thats nothing bad, but I'm just saying...
-
I used to think Alienware were extremly expensive and blazing fast, I guess it's not anymore.. D8
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
I want Dell to make Alienware "twice as fast, half the price"
-
I was condsidering getting this. But it seems like a waste, alienware needs to bridge the gap between the new 11 and this thing, maybe a 14 or 15 inch thats more inline with the small design of the 11.
then again a toshiba with slightly less powerful specs is about a hundred bucks less. So it seems like an alright price. -
What the heck? They force a compatibility error if you configure the GTX 260M with anything less than the i7-720QM.

Megacharge Custom User Title
Probably to actually be able to afford it, then upgrade the CPU later. I think it's a very good idea, it gives "some" people yet another opportunity to afford an Alienware. -
I'm actually thinking about this cause I want the styling of alienware but at the same time I really shouldn't take all my money and spend it on a highend computer. Especially when I need a good car
-
I agree. Considering I picked up my OEM 920XM for $500 after Bing cashback given the opportunity to buy an i3 I would have.
-
Megacharge Custom User Title
Hmm that's pretty damn lame of Dell to pull that on potential customers. -
yeah that is
lol crylo I saw that same picture today on a site showing the worst mugshots -
Megacharge Custom User Title
lol nice, I'm always looking for the ugliest mofo's to use as avatars. -
Well I definitely think you've succeeded
-
He looks like a character from Borderlands.
-
MAYBE, DELL wants to attract those people who wants to BRAG but dont have the money to buy the premium units.
-
Actually I like that they did that. The processor isn't too hard to upgrade yourself, so if you're strapped for cash, you could by the m15x with a few upgrades and then save some more to do the processor yourself later.
I'm still confused as to why you can only order the 260M with the heftier procs though. I'd definitely go with an i3 and 260 to start with. Four threads at 2.13 Ghz is plenty for a lot of games, and I could just save up for a better proc a few months down the road.
Then again, the i3 doesn't have turbo mode, which kinda sucks. It does have hyperthreading though, right? -
Yep, it does have hyperthreading, but meh.. I'm still disapointed...
-
Dell alienware are playing dumb on you all. Low cpu low gpu give reason to charge you on a higher end motherboard $300+. FACT.
It stop people buying low end so they can upgrade at high end. At a lower cost. -
opened a thread recently for " alienware available in electronic supermarket"
that might be the reason for DELL to ship it with i3, keeps the sales price down, get a electronic supermarket chain in europe on board and sell a lot of pieces
good marketing and sales strategy
and performance guys will still pay extra bucks -
I guess it's similar to the M17 having that 2.26GHz C2D as the base processor. Keeping base costs down, and to offer something really cheap for people who can't afford more but want an Alienware
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
that's true now if you can get a gtx-280m cheap and a i7-920xm you can build a monster with the base config. and then turn and sell the i3 and gtx-240 on ebay
