I got my M15x in Apr this year and everything was going ok-ish until now! I thought I was one of the lucky ones!
But My Hinge has finally given way in exactly the same way that other customers have experienced.
Here are the other issues that I've had but managed to get by without complaining
- GPU/CPU downclocking ( waited for the patch )
- Keyboard Lag again waited for the patch
- Touch Control Reponsiveness
- Severe Keyboard flex on the Up/Down/Left/Right Arrow part of the keyboard, sometimes feels like I could push a hole in that area I was not careful
A strange circle appearing underneath the alien on the back of the case, If you imagine that its a painted over dell logo ? or the hole where the dell logo bit goes?
I've put up with this machine for too long and the hinge was the last straw.
Im a uk customer, what are my chances of getting full refund? Has anyone else managed to get refunds?
Im not really interested in a repair as I've seen other customers wait for 3 months !

you're number 11 with this problem. and i think all but one got full refunds so far.
-
I cant understand how its happend as I've been treating this thing more delicately than my own baby!!!
-
Pics would be appreciated.
-
Pics of the hinge below, I couldnt quite get an image of the logo paint thing, its hard to see with the camera.

a classic case. contact AW_James, explain your problem etc, and you should get a full refund.
-
Oh dear lord
-
wow....and i was just about to place my order.....hate seeing this stuff.
grrrrrrrrrr
keep us updated -
Oh well... I guess that time will show all the truth underneath.
You are indeed the 11th case reported (reported... I can't even imagine how many people have experienced this and thought it was an isolated case and had to pay for fixing it, like it was already reported by owner number 10)... You are the number one in the UK though.
I'm sorry to hear about your problem.
Regarding refunds... Jay and Fex got full refunds, Gabez got a refund as well (although he had several other reasons), buzzin was trying a refund but was being refused and the rest... lots of people tried repairing it.
Anyway... good luck dealing with the problem and solving it.
ps: I got a refund but not because of the hinge. PM me if you need some info. -
I feel your pain. I am really surprised at how low the build quality of the m15x really is.

Is this going to happen to everyone eventually...? BTW, at a curiousity, I've seen some videos of some people slamming the m15x closed, to anyone who's had this happen, do you slam it closed or "slowly" close it (like most laptops are meant to be closed).
-
As I said before I close it slowly, I use the sleeve everyhere and even bought a new laptop bag to protect it. I just read through the
"Thinking about getting the M15x? Think again." posts and have noticed the most of the hinges are the right hinge, so maybe it is a design flaw?
Mappy -
another one bites the dust.
Sorry to hear of the problems Mappy.
as mentioned above, quite a few have had refunds. im not sure if its a straight refund or if you have to return it for repair first. could anyone clarify if it has to be returned first for repair and then the 14 day rule starts and a refund can be arranged. -
Really ugly to see those pics and feel really sorry for ya to get such a problem.
As i said before:
AW pushed to get a T-34 with a Tiger firepower, and ended up with a Sherman.
m15x = Sherman tank: A workhorse but if pressed may have deadly consequences. -
class action suit?
-
This is unfortunate. I really don't feel like this will happen to me though. Has anyone else had their m15x for the same (or longer) amount of time as these people and have not experience this broken hinge issue?
-
All people that got refunded had their laptop repaired first (cases of Fex and Jay. Both had the problem resurfacing after a while).
-
-
cool milcs u got a refund... what are u going to get in your M15x place?..
i ended up ordering a np8660 thanks to u but mainly beacuse im in a madrush atm to get it for class work..
if u have the time u should wait for the new VoodooPC or a whitebook m9750 imo. -
IT seems like these problems are more prone to occur after the owner has had it for some time. My guess is that when you've had it for 4+ months the heat gets to the weak hinge areas and cracks the plastic or the LED running through it which causes it to break.
-
Sent mine back to Alienware Last week awaiting their decision. -
but thats off topic.... -
the prophecy rings true

Update:
After contacting AW and explaining the problem the best that they could do was replace the chassis of the system. They explained that the chassis used in my system was one of the "early batch" and that the new ones are much better.
To be fair they carried out this repair in 8 days, I had expected it to be much longer. The new system is working fine at the moment and also seems to be running a lot cooler than before, only time will tell though
Mappy -
Good to hear. Surprised they acknowledged the "early batch" from the "later batch." I guess it's now confirmed that there are differences between the two.
-
or they're just saying that. we don't know...
-
Well It is a brand new case thats all I know, Im pretty sure most of the components were just lifted out of the old case and slapped in the new one. We will never know what happens at the AW factory!
-
10char. -
Yeah, second time I've heard this now. Maybe it is true? I hope so!
-
and there was us all along being told that the chassis have not and wont be updated to a newer model
glad to hear you got it sorted at last Mappy. are you happy with it now or would you have prefered a refund?
thats 3 of us on this thread alone that have gone to the other side now.
Heathkid, me and milcs. i wonder how many more there are. -
Why no one is brave enough just to remove the LCD frame (which I've heard is dead easy), just to have a look at how the hinge is designed? Maybe take some pictures... so that we can compare with the older m15xs.
Anyway, the M860TU has a few problems on it's hands as well. It's not perfect (as no other product is or will ever be) and it's very embryonary still. We can only hope that technology will keep evolving by learning from mistakes and improving on them. And it's "us", the users, that have to give that extra help to push technology in the right direction.
@Mappy - Congrats on them fixing it for you. Let us know how it goes. Do you see any difference in terms of Chassis rigidity/quality, etc? -
Only time will tell for sure. But, I'm kind of feeling confident about the new batches. If my m15x survives (and it will!
) I'll write up a mid life review.
I might actually consider that, milcs. We'll see. -
-
Hi all,
I'm a new member of this forum, I living at Montreal
I love my m15x but..
I have the same problem with the Hinges. I have purchased my m15x in April as Mappy and after couple of month the problem arrived last week .. hinge broken due to insufficient reenforcement of the plastic piece to link the hinge.
I must send the notebook to Alienware to be repaired.
(Armando can you send me in PM the procedure to send the m15x, thank)
Infierno. -
You are lucky owner number 13!!!
Luckily, there is a big compilation of information regarding this issue and hopefully it will make your action and AW's action easier in dealing and solving your problem.
If you would be kind enough to post some pictures for our "collection", that would be extremely helpful.
We should keep confident and hope that AW did really introduce significative changes to deal with this issue. Maybe, 13 is in fact, the lucky number!
ps: don't forget the photos! -
-
mine's "m15x-R1", yeah.
-
Update from my end: its been around a month since my 'fixed' screen was sent back to me. I initially reported that the 'creaking' noises were all but eliminated, but now they're back.
I'm almost waiting for it to break again. I'll let you all know if it does. -
-
-
ahh, the good old days.
-
Wow Infierno is actually quite calm about the situation. Other members usually go crazy
-
Maybe he has faith in the new repairs!
I think there's hope in this "new batch" CS keeps talking about.
-
Haha
I am convinced that Alien doing everything possible to fix the m15x. But they seem have some troubles with the Theirs partners ( chassis factory , it's probably due to cost reduction effect.)
Infierno. -
Those silly partners...
And... photos? You don't have any? -
Hi,
I will take some photos tonight, my contribution to the horror-show
Infierno -
Not an horror show... an informative documentary! -
That picture could help a lot inferno. Milcs could post in in his "why you shouldn't buy an m15x" thread.
How many users have had busted hinges already?
