Ordering mine today. Still not decided between 8800 or 8700. Its what I'm getting from my company for a little hard work. I'm not sure if I should exploit them completely though. :D

Is there a chance that the m15x may come out in black today in the UK? or should I just buy it today itself assuming that even if it comes out in the US today after the big "Alien Network" thing, it will still take a month for them to start in the UK?

One more thing, has any one experienced any problems with the 8700? I have seen a 3Dmark06 result that gives it about 4500 odd score, but can someone with an 8700 tell me what he/she got? Tacomenace? Callidor?

There is the program called ThermoFan which comes preinstalled in the m15x (under Keyboard Manager in the programs list).

Not the first place I would have looked for a temperature monitoring tool.

ok, ive just recieved my new cheapo cooling pad through(i love ebay, hehe) dont ask the name , it aint got one lol. basically do i want it to blow air toward the laptop from the bottom or suck it away? im sure the fans on the bottom are supposed to suck air in and the ones on the back blow out right?

That's correct. The vents on the bottom are for intake, the vents on the back are for exhaust.

    Hi Wraithers
glad to hear your happy and so are most new owners of m15x but their are still a few of us that are still not sorted yet especially me and crizzler.
ive had mine for 10 days now and have been on phone to support for almost 6 hours in 10 days.
opened box at 4pm on tuesday 22nd and by 5pm i was on to support and again at 8pm for an hour each time. i was then given a rma number to return for repair or cancelation. i thought i would give it a chance even tho most things werent working (nero, touch controls, external soundcard).
them 3 things are now sorted but now my system is running so slow at times its like im running on a 56k modem and not 5mb internet connection and also a 128mb of ram and not 4gb.
ive had all the windows applications turned off by support to see if this helps but all that does is turns off my anti virus & fx software.
other option is respawn but i just dont have time at the moment. time is ticking by and ive only got a couple of weeks to return it for a check up under the 30 day return policy.

oh crap, got an emergency just come in got to go will continue later

hi again people, a quick question, hoping for some advice. basically, ive got a music collection on my external harddrive for my desktop, roughly about 120GB in size, plus a sample collection for music production about 40GB in size. it would be really handy to have all of this on my laptop harddrive, but only have a 200GB on, so obviously putting all this on here will seriously damage its performance and leave me absolutely no room for anything else. can any advice which make/model or any other info on a harddrive that is decent, im looking for 500GB in size i spose so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Having recently switched to laptop; I am also looking for somewhere to store all my old stuff, without cluttering up the HD on my new toy.

I have noticed that there is now a much larger range of hard drive and smart-bay HD options available from Alienware since I ordered back in March.
Hard drives are now 120/160/200/250 GB (7200rpm), plus a 320GB (5200rpm). Still only 64GB SSD though - If you're minted.
Smart-bays are now 80 to 320 GB in size. I'm sure there were not this many back in March, but there were some supply issues back then aswell.
There doesn't appear to be a page on the website where you can just order a replacement smart-bay HD though. I guess you have to call them and ask.

I have not seen any 'portable' drives as big as 500GB in shops in the UK,
but I was rather tempted by the Western Digital 320 GB passport drive I saw in PC World the other day for about £100.

I am not sure that I actually need to port that much data around with me. I am looking at a home network as a solution for my storage needs.

If I did need to carry that much data around with me and access it all the time, I would consider upgrading the hard drive itself.

you can just buy a 80 gig and swap the hard drive to a 320. i dont think you can swap the hard drive's in a 500 gig external hard drive since the ports dont look like they fit and the 500 gig seems a bit too big.

i like the smart bay better since i dont like having a external drive sticking out of my comp. it just makes it more convienant

These things get bigger so fast now. Give it a few more months and 500GB will be standard. This time next year it will be 1TB.

Thanks for the tip though. Smart.

im using a 320gb external from maxtor bought from maplins for £70 which is a great price. i was thinking along the same lines as you as i have over 10.000 tracks on various external hardrives. i only use my computer for backup when im doing discos and always carry the cds with me but it would be nice to have everything on the computer as well.
as ive got the 200gb 7200rpm and if i get the smartbay 320gb 5200rpm would there be a noticeable difference between the two of them.

i wouldnt recommend getting a 320 gig from AW since you can make one yourself and save money. if you are going to get the smart bay i recommend the 80 and swapping it with a 320. its a bit cheaper and you get an extra 80 gig hard drive. when you buy the 320 hard drive you can just get a 2.5 in external enclosure and now you have 2 hard drives for the AW smart bay price of $275. I dont think this does anything to the warranty since there arent any seals to break in the smart bay drive.

you should take a look at this.

actually, you can also purchase the empty SB harddrive chassis from AW after you've bought your m15x. costs under 20 bucks if i remember correctly. then simply pop in a 500gb Samsung and you're good to go.

ok, looking at the info youve all put, ill just say that im thinking id prefer a smart bay hdd because its small, i can keep it in my laptop case with all my music collection on and just slot it in when i want it, when not, i can use my blu ray or extra battery. the smart bay feature is really good i reckon. its so convenient, and having an extra 2 hours(ish) readily avaliable is excellent. ive noticed someone say elsewhere that there blu ray drive works even if they hot swap it for there hdd, when i put mine in with the laptop on, i have to restart to get it to work, thats the only thing.but, can you buy the smart bay hdd from anywhere other than AW?and can i buy one seperately from AW if not?

Received this genius little thing in the post today. It's a SPDIF 3.5mm to TOSLink optical adapter.

Stick it in the headphone jack to get Dolby 5.1 and DTS surround sound output through an optical cable. Highly recommended.

    Thank you eBay! :D

Just ordered it today... have been delaying it for a bit and just the pulled the plug now. I hope I won't end up regreting it... but well... we'll see!
    Quite EXCITED now... :)

Anyway, the remote control can be used to control media player, dvd player programs, etc... It's quite a usefull little thing (specially if you decide to connect it to a TV and use it as a DVD player).

How can one get the remote in the UK?
