I was just wondering if I purchased a standalone monitor, keyboard, and mouse, if it would act more as a desktop. Basically, I just want to keep the laptop closed but still be able to use the standalone monitor and keyboard.

Yes, that would work. Just tell it to use an external display and not turn off when it's closed.

    Yes.

A desktop however would be a lot cheaper

yes even a alienware desktop is cheaper if you use stock specs but if you want to be able to use a laptop and a desktop without buying both things it is a good idea. and the ati drivers work very well for external display

So you need to get a display port to DVI connector? My 25 inch external monitor only has DVI and HDMI.

Why don't you build or buy one of those small desktop PCs with mini-ATX motherboards? They would be small enough for some portability but with around power as a mid size desktop.

do you ever plan on moving the laptop, or just keeping it in it's 'desktop' state?

No there is nothing wrong with using it as a desktop, i'm going to do that with my M17x. They're called desktop replacements so they're really just Portable desktop replacements.

exactly except the m17x is much more suited since it has HDMI, VGA displayport.

Uhhh that's where you're wrong I think. Actually, The display Port is of a little bit higher quality then HDMI, where HDMI is used for Home Theater use the Display Port is better suited for everyday uses and monitor usage. I know right now that my new HP LCD sucks when used with HDMI when compared to the DVI connector.

The M15x comes with a display port -> DVI adapter. Also, you might want to consider a docking station which will make life easier if you plan on disconnecting the laptop frequently

I just mean that not everyone has displayport available so the M17x has more options.

Getting a displayport to DVI connector should be an option as well as Displayport to HDMI if need be. Just a simple cord between 20-50 dollars, I'd imagine.
