Went around the board to compare the temperatures of other gaming desktops. The sager 9262 and the dell m1730 both had similar results:
Normal Fans: Idle=52 High=70
High Fans: Idle=44 High=55
So now compare that to the M15x's tep of 84-85C and as high as 90C. This can't be good right? I mean the other gaming notebooks has a high temp of 70C when gaming. Could the heat of 84-90C be unhealthly for the M15x? Discuss

I am going to be checking the temperatures of the m1730 this weekend and I will post them here. I think it is higher than 70 when gaming. My dv9700 used to go up to mid 80's with an 8600GS

Thanks for quick respsonse Mag, gave u rep, more feedback please

I'm not sure a comparison to 17" notebooks is appropriated. There's space in there to put a peltier cooling if you really want to
. We need data to compare with other 15", unfortunately there's no 8800 in those yet. Also nvidia says 8800 can handle 80-85° without problems (i still think that the ones going to 90-100 are defective in some way) so it shouldn't worry us as long as it doesnt go to much beyond that.
-
well even tho the 17" systems are bigger in frame, remember it has two video cards, a bigger overal board so its also jampacked in there. I jsut want to see if the high 80C+ heat is safe for the system and no one yet seemed to give me a response to that
-
As I've posted previously, my system peaked at 105*C while running FurMark and 99*C while playing Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts. Defective GPU? Defective cooling system compared to other m15x units? Who knows. System went back today for a refund, and I'm glad to be rid of it.

I hope they didn't charge you a restocking fee Mysterio, that would definitly be unfair
-
It's a shame the unit was a lemon, since I was really looking forward to owning one. Instead, I'll be building a new desktop PC with an Intel E8400 CPU, two EVGA 8800GTX cards in SLI, 4GB of Corsair Dominator system memory, four 320GB 7200RPM Seagate hard drives in Raid 0, and 32-bit Windows Vista Ultimate for ~ $1400 less than what I was paying for the m15x. -
Mysterio, will you still have to pay the shiping costs?

The Nvidia 8800M GTX GPU temp on my Clevo M570 (aka Sager NP5793) gets up to 85C when pushed and never downclocks or has other problems. Not sure about the temps in the rest of the notebook. Is there a good program out there to track the temps around the system? I've used SpeedFan (I think that's the name) on my old Dell XPS, but it only gives me one temp on most notebooks now.
-
my np5793 has not yet broken 70C under load.
and wow mysterio, i was told that I had to take the suck on the shipping to return my m15x. I still have not seen a refund, even though alieware has had it back for a week, but its not bothering me right now since my CC company already gave me a conditional refund. -
Try emailing AW-Steve with your account number. He DID promise full refunds for a couple of people here already. Like Travis, and others....
-
alienware-steve never replied to any of the 4 e-mails I sent him, so I dunno if he could help at all
-
I am really curious of those returned m15x. what will happen to them? sell as refurbish? -
I can understand where the downclocking is a concern, but it's not like these temp numbers are anything uncommon in gaming laptops guys. All my Dell XPS gaming laptops over the last few years have always gotten well into the 80's when under heavy load. The cards are designed to handle those temps just fine.
-
@groove75 - That's also the reason why I also think that it's not a overheating problem. The x30bios update only made the fans blow harder to keep temps lower, but the 8800M GTX keeps on downclocking regardless. -
Today I will be testing the temperatures at the m1730. I will let you guys know as soon as I can. Just to note that the m1730 that I will be testing has two 8700m GT in SLi because it was ordered before the 8800m GTX was released.
-
hey, how much cooler is the 8700 than the 8800?

Can you tell me when you sent me those emails? I can't seem to find any of them in my inbox. -
. sorry I mean her.
-
haha, that's that I was thinking...since he, ummmm, I mean she is not answering my question. Wow.
-
I also got the Sager NP5793 it never crossed 70 degress under heavy duty despite me living in a tropical environment...
I think the comparison between the 15" AW and different 17" Gaming-NBs is still valid, if they feature similar internal parts. Eg. the 8800M GTX and possibly the Extreme CPUs.
If I am not mistaken the intention of this thread is to figuere how hot other NBs get without causing a downclocking compared to the m15x. Not in relation to the size of the chassis.
Thus a faulty cooling-system could be proved or disproved.
I find the theory interesting which unrelates the downclocking of the m15x`s 8800M GTX from temperature. In extrem cases the GPU should be able to work close to a hundered degrees without downclocking. Even if its quite unhaelthy to do so...for exaple a discompability with the "stealth/Binary GFX" feature. Its the only real hardware-difference to other gaming-laptops apart from the chassis size...
any thoughts?
