Hello all. This is my first post on NB review. I am going off to college in the fall and i m investing in a new laptop because i have some extra money saved up after getting a full scholarship and want to get a pretty nice laptop for college. I play games like crysis and oblivion and will continue to play games like that so i want a computer that has the processing power i need.
After looking around I am planning to get the m15x because of its lighter weight and better battery life. Alienware charges a lot for different components like memory and graphics cards so i figure i can install them myself.
So i had a few questions that i hoped some people here could straighten out for me.
1) Its far cheaper to buy memory from newegg or amazon so im going to do that. My question is when i put in the new memory, is it just plug and play or will i need to install additional drivers or change settings. if so what will i have to do.
2) Can i purchase the nvidia 8800 gtx from say newegg or amazon and then put it in the laptop since all the prices i see online for the card or more than 200 dollars less than with alienware. Which specific 8800 card is the one that fits in the m15x. I saw the tutorial on how to put in the new graphics card but what will i have to do once i put it in. Will i have to install certain drivers,? Is it complicated? and what would i have to do.
Ive been reading around the forums for a week now and it seems the community here for alienware is very helpful and professional which is very reasurring since what i hear is that alienware support is dismal.
Im nearly sure i will get the m15x but i think ill wait til over the summer once they release black for the m15x (i hope) and maybe..just maybe fix that awful wobble.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer.

1. Memory is plug-and-play
2. The 8800 GTX you're seeing on Newegg and Amazon is the desktop graphics card, not the 8800 M GTX, which is the laptop version of that card. As I'm sure you can understand, the cards on Amazon and Newegg therefore wouldn't work.
Hope that helps -
yes its cheaper to purchase and install your ram.
you cant cpurchase a 8800m gtx from online retailers. -
