Hi, this is my first post. Yeah I am a noob but I have recently been reading posts on this forum and lurking.

I am looking at getting a laptop for college and I am in the dark ages with them since I have used desktop computers for awhile. Alienware seems to be pretty appealing for their reputational designs and gaming platforms. I'll be doing some medium gaming, nothing much, I love the battlefield series but more importantly I like to work with audio and want to have a good audio system.

I was looking at the M15x and was reading posts on here and it seems that the audio seems to be lacking. The M9750 has a subwoofer system but I am unaware which is better. The M9750 seems to have more outputs to link up to TV's etc.; is the updated M15x able to compare to the older system in connectability?

Also, I like the design of the M15x moreso, the colors, more sleek, display... but there are the mentioned problems of cracks forming, overheating, and other crap. Cracks are a problem, is there any word of the updated body being released. Will heat develope even though I am not running major games like crysis? And I have heard that the M9750 is a bit outdated, I want to have a notebook that will last through college or nearly through...?

Yeah so if anyone could help me out on making a decision, that would be erm helpful

In short: Need college notebook, no major gaming but I do like to play battlefield or similar games occasionally, like audio and want a good built in system to help me with that (again, no major audio stuff just simple things). And I plan on majoring in engineering.

    Thanks

i think that alienwares laptops have sort of specialitys...

    M15x Highend gaming + batterylife +HDMI
    M9750 medium gaming +Audio / specialty inputs

if you just want to medium games... mabye alienware is not right for you...

the M9750 is from a past generation of gaming notebooks and thus has quite bad batterylife i think a hour?... but reasonable performance with its duel 8700 gpus .

the M15x is the newest of the new as far as gaming laptops go and has quite afue complaints on the feel of the unit as well as some heating issues.. and a assortment of other small issues that may or may not effect you and you should research.. the main one for a collage environment is that the lock on the m15x only works with a select fue cable locks.. so do some reasearch/forum search here.
the battery life on the m15x is really its main selling point able to do 5hours + with smartbay battery.

If you want to do medium gaming i wouldn't really suggest any of the alien ware systems to you... other than maybe the cheapest con fig of the m15x with a 8600 or 8700 gpu..

i would look at other places mabye dell or gateway or Toshiba at cheaper bigger brands and you could pay a faction of the price! for the same gaming you will be doing any way..

if you really want the brand name of ALienware but m15x not maxed out very high would do you fine for battlefield2 or any game other than crysis over the past year or 2.

And yer don't think about the m9760 in your case i think 1hour battery for collage is a bad idea i would think.

from the sounds of it if u stick with a laptop with any laptops with a (cheap)8600 or 8700 or 8800 GTS or GTX(hella expensive)... u should have more than enugh performance for the light gaming you wish to do.. esp seeing as PC dev is switching to lighter games like Battlefield Heroes due out soon which only requires a 1gig CPu and 512 of ram and integrated GFX! to run well.

    There are girls at collage...

Girls + sager = fail ... im sorry i've actually asked opinions. sagers are ... brutaly2 the point china designed hardware some people find the elegent... but i concertedly don't they do however have a great community on this forum that will give u a ton of info and help. +1!

maybe look at a macbookpro and install XP or Vista on it.. if u want style but they do get hot on the lap this is true.

If your a fan on battlefeild2 or 2142 a 8600gpu is more than enough for the foreseeable future.. esp the root heroes and the franchise on the PC is taking.

    Just a word of advise.
The M15x is only about looks. Inside you will find CPU and GPU overheating, LCD lid wobbliness, Lights bleeding through plastic (like you were buying a nice china toy), no kensington lock, no VGA port and... it will eventually melt the hinge close to the GPU.
So, if you are wise, stay away from the M15x.

yes alot of early adopters have had these issues but the reports of this sort of response has dropped drastically after the most recent bios update and more and more as the months have gone on.. but this is still disputed

if you live outside of the US u prob have a higher risk of getting hold of one of the early dodgy builds of the m15x due to how they are distributed.

VGA port can be used via a cheap USB adapter u can if your collage still uses some VGA projector

Like i said some locks dont work on the m15x however some do.. i be leave the popular Kensington lock brand does not... there is a post on this forum detailing which locks work and which do not.

Also i would keep in mind that this forum is used as a complaints forum largely for Alienware due to the highly moderated nature of the offical AW tech support forum.. so yer your bound to run into ALOT of negative experiences like the one above.

I'm not going to go into any discussion with you... I just want you to reflect about this sentence: Worst than ignorants are the ignorants that think they know a lot.
Take care and say hi to the girls from college.

the 2 machines are about the same Raw power in terms of most Games because they mostly have the same GPU power when the m9750 is using SLI, but in RTS, the m15x's CPU will shine, but this doesn't make the m9750 medium gaming, its still high end, and i'm not saying that because i have the m9750, no i'm saying that based on facts that both machines will perform the same -RTS and -Overheating, but i wont miss the fact that the m15x is lighter, thinner, and have more better looks with its keyboard lights and fancy looks and in addition to smart bay and the battery thing, and because its 15inch, that gives it the upper hand over the m9750

Your laptop decision should not be based upon your laptob's ability to help you pick up girls...in fact, if you're using your laptop to pick up girls you're just...wow...

Anyway, to adress the OP, I returned my m15x a little bit ago, and got a pretty tricked out Sager NP5793. the gaming performance is amazing, but more importantly for you, i think the speakers are the best ive ever heard on a laptop. you may want to check out a base configured np5793 as one of your options..very solid build, and great speakers. just a thought

This is not a helpful conversation at all, and I've had to delete several posts due to offensive content. Thread closed.

Original poster, feel free to post another thread about the same topic and we can start over. None of this was your fault.
