So at the moment i am looking at either the Alienware m15x or the HP Envy 15 and i heard that the m15x might be getting a new GPU within the next couple of weeks, is that true? if so how much of a performance gain would it give against the 260m GTX? and how much better is it then the 5830 that is found in the Envy 15? As i believe that the nVidia graphic cards are more expensive then the ATI graphic cards could there be a slight price drop, anything is better then nothing :)

haven't heard anything about new staff coming into M15x. The only rumor for now is the M17x might get 5870s in the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye on the Cebit 2010.

The 260m runs faster than the 5830. And the 5870 really, really pushes the performance expectation. It's comparable to dual raided 280's.

HUH? Sounds like you don't have a clue what you are talking about. The Mobility Radeon 5870 would get smoked by dual 280M's and you don't RAID graphics cards, there is SLi for Nvidia and CrossFire for ATI. Dual mobility 5870's on the other hand would out perform dual 280M's and the 5870's come with the bonus of DX11 compatibility.

@Ash I would hold out for the 5870 if you can.

Well, Crylo, in all fairness, the 5870s do have great potential. Alexrose did some tests using the slightly faster desktop 5770 (I think). He ran all tests at full 1200p resolution, just to get the full benefits of the SLi setup, and even then, the average was close. The 280s were about 20% faster, but the 5770 handled anti-aliasing better, and had higher minimum framerates.

Of course, the 5870 mobility is slightly lower on the clocks compared to the desktop 5770, but one could make up for that via overclock.

Nevertheless. . . you're right. One can't infer that a stock mobile 5870 will compare to dual 280s. That's streatching it a bit too much, especially on a forum where people use minor gains--much less than even 15%--to declare one card faster than the other.

I Find notebookcheck.net quite useful in determining where on the speed, efficiency and features scale a particular fx card ranks.

That should answer most of your fx questions...

I doubt two gtx280s in Sli would be slower than a single 5XXX card though.

However there seem to be so many problems with Sli that it has swayed me to back to the single fx card wagon. Just make sure you get the best card for the best performance is all...

The price will rather increase than drop as the ATI is a brand new card and the 260m is about a year old..

Should be cheaper to make, but will cost more because it is an industry and they won't shoot down a greater profit margin simply because they care for and love their customers.
