Does anyone know? It never turns on by itself when I'm not plugged in, is there a setting that needs to be changed? I don't care much for getting 10-20 minutes more of battery power...

Try and run on battery power again and check if your computer is set to have the AlienFX controller to be executed during start-up. If it isn't, try going to your Start Menu > All Programs > Alienware > AlienFX Controller. If doing that turns on your AlienFX, then it means that you don't have the AlienFX Controller to start up during boot-up.

Correct, Alienfx is running as an application, but the lights do not turn on. I think it's a hardware problem

Perhaps! Call Roswell to see if they can figure out what the problem is and hey, if it is a hardware problem, they might end up sending you a replacement keyboard.

U have probably turned off the lights when u r on battery power. Go into alienfx and check what ur battery alienfx profile is and what color should the keyboard show while it is on battery power. If it is black then there is ur problem.

Suspecting a hardware problem when the lights are working while plugged in seems like a long shot.

Yeah theres an option to turn it off to save what little power it can when its on battery. Just find that option and turn it off :)

Open Alienware command Center; Go to AlienFusion; Click advanced setting on Custom profile; Under Aditional Settings Tab it will say AleinFX; make sure it says on when in battery. If that dose not fix it you might have a hardaware problem.

Let me see if I can help here.. I am not sure though if I understood the problem correctly and that's why rephrasing it here.

If you are on AC power AlienFX works fine but as soon as you go on battery power it turns off itself? Is that's the behavior you are seeing? Your AlienFX theme can be held responsible for that. AlienFX can be configured to use different colors on AC/DC power, every single light supports that functionality but software does not give that option for every single LED.

Try this... create a new theme and use it. Do let me know if you find any difference.

It's been a long time I've had the m15x, but I remember having an option to completely shutdown alienfx when on battery to save on battery life, I guess...
So, I'm sure that's not a hardware problem, but rather a software one (and I'm even unsure whether that is a problem...).

THAT would indicate, to me, the presence of a hardware related issue... NOTHING ELSE SAID HERE has indicated to me a problem with the hardware. I say, take AW-Armando's advice, reinstall CC.

Beyond that, check the advanced settings on your power profile, there's actually a list you can get to (unsure how to get there right at this moment) that's an advanced power profile editor... this is a VISTA app, not AW, so head to your power options in your Vista CP. There's actually options added to the menu for AlienFX and it's behaviour on batteries; I'd check that too.

AlienFusion is a good start too, but I always feel like I have more control with the Vista CPs... I feel more connected to the OS, rather than just using a centralized fancy-looking dialog from a 3rd party... (probably the main reason why I don't change the settings on my laptop very much... neither colours, nor power options)

BattleDuck, I think you should take this opportunity to contact Armando, soon. Of course, I recommend trying what he says and looking into a few things before doing so, but don't wait too long. If this is, in fact, a major hardware problem for you, then you'll wanna get it fixed ASAP.

If alienfx works on AC power I cannot take it as hardware issue, for sure this is an software issue. I have seen similar issue before and documented in my GUIDE's FAQ...

Hey Mystik, i found what you were talking about, but it is set to ON on battery, so it's probably some type of software problem
    [IMG]

I have tried reinstalling CC, to no avail. It still happens,

Have you tried the possible 3 fix that I talked about ? I could think of many things to test the hardware but you need to patch your Command Center to allow custom application development against it. Do let me know if you want to know how to patch CC and then run my test application to see if its hard/software failure.

I believe it's a problem in the start up because if I turn it on with AC power, lights go on, and if i put it in sleep and unplug it, it will still come out of sleep with lights on

It seems like it decides to use lights or not when first being turned on, dependent on if it's on AC power or not

Can you try the Color Wheel application that I recently created.
Patch the CC, (take backup of files if you plan to revert back to original CC).
Download the Color Wheel application from my GUIDE, see the link in signature
Unplug your m15x, start the Color Wheel and set the colors to any color of your choice. Apply it... see if your lights turn On.
