This applies to 32 bit x86 versions.
    64 bit not tested.

I thought I would start a thread to help anyone else looking for XP drivers to install on the M17.

I can first tell you that alot of the drivers on the AW support CD have drivers that work. The driver I found that work on the support CD are as follows.
    - Chipset
    - ESATA
    - FingerPrint
    - MCR (Memory Card Reader)
    - TV Tuner (infrared transceiver driver via windows update)
    - OSD (On Screen Driver) (OSD Latest version Here)

(I noticed the OSD driver gave me the white dot/ weird, the OSD (On Screen Display) isn't working anyway in XP, but the buttons do. I recommend not installing these OSD Drivers)

    Others: XP Installed
    - Camera XP installed Driver
    - TouchPad XP installed Driver or Download Here
    * Turbo memory (Don't have it)

    * First thing your going to want is to backup some Lan Drivers or else you'll never be able to get online.

    - The Realtek RTL8187SE Wireless LAN
    Download Here
( My last install, I had a corrupt realtek audio driver file and only had the intel version backed up. I installed then uninstalled because it didn't work, But, for some reason the realtek driver on the support disk would then work. also weird.)

    - Wired LAN Driver
    Download Here

    - Realtek Audio Drivers
    Download Here

    - Video Driver
I used mobility modder to make my own XP compatible
    http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

This now leaves me with several (5) Unknown Devices.
I'm still trying to figure this out. I will update as necessary.

    - Possible solutions
    Bluetooth
    Install Wired Lan Driver
Specialized keyboard control chips and so on.
IMSM Driver (Intel Matrix Storage Manager)

(infrared transceiver driver via windows update didn't work for me)

More drivers available on this page... (Not Tested)

    http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do

    Select Network Controller / Windows 32 /

    Then download.

well, I just took a job with the local government IT department...they use XP Pro on all their workstations, so I figured it would good to have it installed for learning purposes at home....besides it's still a good OS, I'm not a Vista-hater by any means but XP still works good

I have got the mysterious 5 device drivers narrowed down to specialized keyboard control chips and so on.

We now need someone to help do some hard sleuthing with the makers of those chips in Taiwan as to device driver availability, etc.

Without these drivers, the screen brightness function is disabled, and so is a lot of other critical functions.

I have done all this with my Alienware M17, everything is working good now with windows XP. Only one big problem left, when setting other screen resolutions than the default(Which is 1920*1200) it wont resize itself, even tried to do it from CCC(Catalyst Control Center). So this gives me black areas around the screen display when having other resolutions. No fun when I want to play a game like Counter strike or any game at all when the screen is black around the lower screen display resolution.

It looks to me like it has something to do with the graphics driver, that this resize function is not working or something. I used the mobility modder to make it work of course, but maybe it did not work good enough. Everything else seems fine, but frustrating that I dont know how to fix this resize to fit screen problem..? Anybody know how?

Its a common issue we all have, as you said correctly its a driver problem, basically the installation .inf.

The only way around it which we use at the moment is a modded .inf, you can find 8.12 and 9.1 modded drivers in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=329941. Sadly we didnt manage to do a proper modding of the 9.2 but 9.3 should be out soon :)

Hello, I have an Alienware m17
    Intel Core2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz 2 x 2048MB
320GB 7,200RPM (xMB Cache) w/ Free Fall Protection
    Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
1GB Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M - SLI Enabled (NB10E-GT1)

I am trying to install windows XP on it but I am running into a problem. I keep getting the Blue Screen of Death with a Stop 0X000007B code.
How did you go about getting the install started.
Any help is highly appreciated I am going nuts trying to figure this out. I use the computer for gaming and while the game looks awesome on Vista there is something wrong where menus and stuff are working very slow (Final Fantasy XI).

Thank you again for any help.
