    Hi
I am going to buy an AlienWare M17. I do not do any gaming, but still want one (I know, I know). What are the minimum specs I should look at?
My main use will be a replacement for my desktop (run out of room).
    General use Word, Excel etc.
    Downloading.
I also need it to play HD files on my Plasma (Pioneer 506XDE) through HDMI.
I need a good wireless connection.
I would be happy to upgrade components in the future as necesary.

Lastly will prices go down after the holiday? Should i wait?

What about getting a nice multimedia notebook like HP HDX 18t?

i think the base specs of the machine are enough for your needs .. which comes to 1399$ .. i dont think prices would increase after the holidays .. the machine was launched with this price .. upgradeablity is really good with this one

Why do you HAVE to have a m17? There are better and more portable laptops for that price, especially if you don't game. Like the Sony FW,AW or Gateway P-7811FX.

    Right. Might do that.
It is very tempting to put a check mark in those little boxes isn't it.

Is there such a thing as an "AlienWare Sale" after Christmas?

hehheh havnt heard such a thing ... january might sprew up interesting things though ... if dell upgrades all its notebook at ces ... i suppose alienware might as well too, it even might introduce new notebooks! although thats just my speculation since alienware's m15x and m17x is getting backdated due to their older chipset ..

Remind me again why does he needs 4gb ram since he doesnt do any gaming or run heavy apps ram wise ?

Lowest price you can order the M17 from the AW site is £1050 which is not bad.

    Come with a:
512MB ATI® Mobility Radeon™ HD 3870 (one card which is decent)
    2gb ram
    160gb hdd
    and a P8400 2.26GHz cpu.

Since you dont do any gaming at all dont think you will have a problem with that configuration.
