I have had Windows 7 installed flawlessly (other than Halo 2 Vista which I FINALLY fixed) for about a month now.

Today I was in the middle of watching a video, and the computer froze. After restart, my sound doesn't work. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers. It won't play the test tone but shows the device is installed and running properly.

I booted up with Vista (dual boot) and the audio works fine.

    Any suggestions?

    Wow...not even moo responded.

    Little update:

I did a system restore to a previous point a few days ago and the sound started working again. However, when I woke up this morning, I had the same problem. I don't know what's going on.

When you did the system restore, did you install anything after? If you did, it might be causing the problem.

Update your audio drivers to the newest version.

I have the newest version drivers.

I hadn't installed anything new at the point where the audio stopped working.

I did a restore to a point a few days ago before a few of the Windows Updates installed.

I've been installing one at a time and rebooting all morning in an effort to see if one of them is conflicting somehow with the audio. So far it seems like the problem may be Windows Live Essentials, although I'm not completely sure of that because when the problem started initially I hadn't chosen to let Windows Update install it....I think.

I didn't have old drivers installed, only the new ones, but yes, I did uninstall them completely before reinstalling them.

The problem now keeps recurring. I do a System Restore and it works for a while, then the sound goes away again.
