So I bought my M17 back in December last year. The main thing I was waiting on was the 4000 series ATI cards. When they came out finally, I didn't jump the gun and was going to wait till October to pick them up. Now I have just discovered that they no longer (or if ever) are doing upgrades to the M17. Now I'm stuck at a crossroad because I'm a computer junkie and was really looking forward to this and love upgrading. I have to figure out whether I'm going to drop another couple grand for the M17x or if its time to move to another company (4870 are tempting me, but skeptical if AW will pull the same trick again).

Anyways, this is just a rant thread because of the 10 month lifespan given by AW to the system.

10 months is a long time when dealing with laptops.

You should never purchase a laptop with the intent to upgrade its video card. This applies even for laptops with modular graphics.

You're a bit late...They've been gone for quite a bit now.

They offered the 4850s as an upgrade twice but cancelled all the orders just days later. Only one known person has ever actually recieved the upgrade.

As Lithus says, never buy with the intent of a later graphics upgrade.

I was mainly comparing the lifespan to some of AW previous systems. I knew what I was getting into when I bought the system. But I listened to the whispers about the future 4870's that sold me (though I should have known better, I believe they have done this in the past). I am just angry that they did release the 4850's and I missed the short window to get them.

They actually begged him to send them back after they realized the box with the 4850's was already sent out to him lol.

Unfortunately there's too much talk here about this simple fact too. Point being, the fact that while the system may support it in the future, don't rely on forum speculation of being able to just call up the OEM and have them offer you the upgrade.

Wow, apparently it was an incredibly short window. This is just a kneejerk reaction on my part. I will get over it. I'll pry sell or ebay the M17 and sink my teeth into something more powerful. Technology addiction is a hell of a thing.

and as for the 4870's for the M17x, they are being sold in new systems so far. No upgrade is available at the moment, but a part number for a full upgrade kit has been found - no known price at the moment. If you want ATI cards, then it makes sense to just order the M17x with the 4870 CF right out of the gate
