Note: Those whose are going to ask "why u didn't wait for the allpowerful M15x  " - don't ask!

the price of a M17 with 4850's hasnt changed since the day they released the option.....they have just been lowering the base price and raising the 4850 price steadily

This is just to hook on customers - it is pretty crappy if you ask me

Believe it or not, not everyone gets the 4850s, and the base price cost reductions have to come out somewhere, like in the 3870s for example. Could be to draw down some stock, or just get you to relook at the machine, but either way in all seriousness, its just good business practice.

everyone should be getting the 4850's ;)

It is true though that if you get the 3870s this is becoming an amazingly priced notebook

$999 for the m17,,not bad,,,god, only if they did not want a $200 upgrade for the 1900 x 1200....its very tempting,,,even if i have to live with the 1440 x 900 lcd screen.

Don't say that like the 1440x900 screen is a bad thing! I've been using it and it's perfect. I'm sure the 1920x1200 screen IS better but still...

yea...i know how you feel...the upgrade is sort of stiff...then one just as well go with the refurbish m17x,,,$1300, and get 8700 sli...i have an inspiron 1520 with 8600m gt...i sort of worry about the 8600 m gt,,,nvidia problem they are having with some gpu...i just ran 3dmark06,,,and my high temp was 61c...i believe that is fairly normal.

Dell website says M15x is $999 while the AW one is at $1,049. Nonetheless, its pretty sure they're clearing out stocks :D

While it says the m15x "starts" at $1049 on the AW site, you can select the Ripley with a 1440x900 screen and that drops the price to $999.

Though they did jack up the price on the 4850s, you can pay $1,800 for dual 4850s + 1920x1200 res screen. The CPU doesn't really matter much now that you can OC it to decent levels. I think this is the best deal for a gaming notebook now that they jacked up the price of the Asus W90.

I ordered right before they dropped the price.. now I changed the order and added the hi-res screen to net a 100 increase. The low(er) res screens are delayed. So get the hi-res if you wanna get your top anytime soon.
    thanks,

I am really surprised by the devaluing of the M17.
Its specs are very close the M17x specs, it simply lacks the possibility of some future upgrades.
Its an incredible time to buy the M17, way better deal than the M17x.

That's what happens when something is nearing end-of-life. lol

Get rid of them then Dell/AW can push the M17x even harder....

    Scam.

They lowered the base price, but raised the prices on all the internals.

it aint a scam, just good marketing, gives the customer perceived value where they really added none

the only way this is a great deal is if you were considering the base config anyway

i still think the M17 will be on the site for another year at least.
its about the same power as the M17x right now, i dont think its about to be
    completely phased out or anything.

If it is the same power, that is exactly the reason to phase it out. Why offer two similar products? It will also be a victim of the integration of the Alienware production into Dell. Ending the last two notebooks will allow Dell to close the separate production lines, saving money.

You know there is something up when you can't even buy the m17x with the titanium acount. Only DPA. I think the above statement is true. Dell may be slowly phasing out the old units to consolidate models and streamline business process and production. I can honestly say that Alienware Sales is not greater than Dell. I dont have experience with support.
    Thanks,

The m17 and m15x are going to be cut pretty soon.

They will have 2 systems, the M17x and refreshed M15x.

that would be cool if the rumors were true about that one.
it would be incredible if they could put a 9800GT in that or something...
