So my m17 lcd is dead. Called alienware tested using an external (alienware) monitor here at home. So its not the GPUs but is the lcd. My warranty (stupid me did not extend beyond the one year like I did with my m15x now sold and giving the new owner a life of hell) is expired so they estimate repairs at between 280-640 (the higher price is with an all new lcd installed) shipping included in the price. Now my question is can this be fixed by a local tech (I know a guy who works at staples) or could I even do it? I believe they said the LCD was 360 by itself. help! I want to game on my alienware but can't.

oh and supposedly according to my rep the warranty could not have been extended on it because of dell and its new policies etc this seems somewhat believable but also frustrating as hell.

I'm pretty sure once dell took over Alienware, they offered no extended coverage for any model that wasn't produced while dell was calling the shots. So it sounds right. As far as replacing the LCD. If your comfortable with changing it yourself, then yea, you can do it. You may want to check ebay, or even put a WTB ad in the marketplace under the price check/WTB section. Might be able to get a hold of one cheaper.

You better do it yourself, the manuals are pretty easy to follow and you can always refer to this forum for assistance.
Have you tried disassembling the system and re-seating the LCD connectors?
Maybe the screen is even ok? ;)

    Here you go
You can search their database for some additional guides if you like.
Before buying something you might not need, try opening the system and re-seating the connectors.

well I just got a good look at it in the sunlight as opposed to in the house and it has a physical crack so it needs to be replaced however if I can do it myself I'm looking at 260 or so rather than 600 or so

Yes, don't worry. Doing it yourself will also reduce the chances of additional damage. Most of the outsourcing tech's these days destroy more than fix ;)
