    Price does not matter.

I know Sager is cheaper and better.

Yes, desktops are more powerful and much cheaper.

I do use quad cores for games such Supreme Commander and the few others that use quad core. I also know that CPU intensive games that have released soon have provided quad core support.

    **********************************************************

First the M17 has the quad core and I am really liking that. My only resignation about the M17 are the 3870's as I am unsure how they compare to the 9800's in the M17x. The only reason I would consider the M17x would be for the 9800's. I really want the quad core.

Do the 3870's give much of a performance difference in comparison to the 9800's?

Is the difference enough to be worth giving up a quad core for?

    Thanks,
    Compstomper

no go for the m17. the m17x is old technology. unless you are a heavy gamer (very heavy gamer) you dont need 9800mgtx sli. my 3870 xfire runs anything i throw at it at max settings.

and the quad will help the ati since they depend on the cpu more.

I have a m17x but I would rather have the m17 due to the ddr3 ram. The 9800's and 3870 are pretty close performance wise but the m17 has better processors and ram. The only thing I dont like is the m17 case it doesnt have as much ventilation. My graphic cards have vents on the front of my lapotp for the fans to suck air onto the GPU's. I can feel alot of air getting sucked into the vents so its a nice design compared to the m17. Kind of a hard choice but ddr2 ram is dead id wait for the m17x to upgrade to the ddr3 ram. Contact the rosewell crew and see if you can find out if they are currently working on that.

the differnce between ddr2 vs ddr3 isnt big but ddr3 uses less power then ddr2.

the vents for the m17 i think are excellent. the bottom is made so can be put on any surface without it sucking in dirt at the bottom. in the rear alot of heat blows out but that is because of the 2gpu's (the heat has to go somewhere)

and the vents on side for the cpu.
fans or off below 45c i think
fans starts in level 1until 60
fans start level 2 until 70-75
fans very loud and loud 80 and up.

Yeah but the m17x entire front side is a vent and entire back is a vent. Everything is on the sides which is nice. They were smart and didnt put the highly used ports on the right side also! I hate when laptops have all the usb's and headphone jacks on the right side.

I really like both systems but you just have to go with the M17 and the newer hardware and upgrade possiability's. Did someone say Quad, someday soon hope to upgrade mine, just watching and waiting. :)

Have had both. Like the M17X style and keyboard but the M17 performs better.

Banned? for what? because I am giving my opnion?

I am not saying anything thats obusive its my own experience and I am sharing it

is that not the point of forums?

Why does everythin need to be a positive post?

Everyone understands you're upset about your computer but you have to contain your anger in your thread and not spread it to others. You can voice your opnion whether negative or positive as long as it is constructive and adds to the OPs subject.

Saying, take your money and run, doesn't help the OP's with his original question if he should get the M17 or M17x.

I have seen many people get banned for it. I'm just looking out for ya. :)

no, not everything needs to be positive... but everything in it's place dude. here's a guy, that if you read the first post he made, he knows what he wants... and he wants alienware.

CS doesn't really matter, price doesn't really matter, and he just wants opinions ABOUT HIS QUESTIONS, not everything to do with AW.

if you want to flame alienware, go make a few posts of "I know! they suck!" in the "bad aw cs" threads that are prevalent around the forums... not here.

posting that junk here is HOW you get banned. not because you have an opinion, but because you think EVERYONE cares.

Compstomper, If you want a Alienware.. and have to have it

Go for the M17, it is new technology as many have already stated, and also

Yes, its true the 9800 Are better performance wise then the 3870's..

But as many have also already stated the M17 are getting the new 4870's mobility which are equal to the power of 4850's desktop version..

you will get more out of the M17 then the M17x

with regards to quad core, it is more or less to future-proof your machine. Currently there are not many games that will take full advantage of the quad..

But there will be.. its worth the investment if you have the money

If you want a bit more style over performance, the M17x would be the better choice. The keyboard lights up much better than the M17 and the design is one of a kind. For performance, the M17 will have the edge.

I wish the M17 could be morphed into the M17x shell, I like the look better, just my opinion. Ahhh, then again I wish the wifey sometimes could be morphed into Megan Fox but that's not likley to happen either... ;)

Yes style wise, the M17x is the best choice.

But performance wise, the M17 is better.

Even AW states that on their website.

Thanks for all of the good replies.

I will choose the M17 over the M17x.

Also, just out of curiosity, are there any benchmarks directly comparing the M17 to the M17x in something like Crysis? I'm just wondering what kind of performance improvement I would notice over my M9750. I suspect the laptop would come close to performing about equal to my GTX 260 (216).

Yes, I am heavily into gaming, as I do it professionally.
