will you upgrade to the 4850's? If so will you do it yourself or get aw to do it?

Although I'm very pleased with the performance my 3870's provide, an increase in performance as huge as what the 4850's will provide, is too much to resist.

Plus, my (now my wife's) M9750 will see a big boost in performance with the 3870's. And at $227.95 for each 4850, it's a great buy.

    Ive posted this excert from an E-mail I received from Alienware in another 4850 thread but I think it is appropriate here as there is still confusion about whether we can but the cards at all and whether we can install it ourselves as well as pricing(UK).......here goes;

"Regarding the graphics upgrade, for the M17 there is ATI RADEON M98 1GB HD4850 MASTER for 187.75 GBP each available. They can be replaced by you with a technician on the phone. The crossfire cable should be included with the secondary video card, I will find out whether that is true and have it placed in the notes, so that once you call us to purchase this upgrade, an agent will be able to see it and tell you.
Unfortunately, there is no discount available for this upgrade.

    Thank you for choosing ALIENWARE."

Hmm if the temps of these new cards arent any higher than the 3870's then I think they'll probably work for the M9750 also and i'll test it if i can get my hands on one!
Btw Rob when you do get yours and put the 3870's into your M9750 make sure you reposition the memory chip thermal pads so that they cover the memory chips on the 3870's since the location of the chips is slightly different than on the nVidia cards.

I voted for buying them and putting them in myself.

The last email I got said probably have to wait 2 weeks before we can purchase them in the U.S.

I probably won't as I am pretty happy with what I have and I have a desktop (hp firebird) that offers a bit more oomph when needed. I can't afford 4850s if I did I would do the job myself though.

Sell your 4850s to Rob41 so he can upgrade wifey's 9750 and sell off his 3870s when he buys 4850s for his own M17 himself.

Sounds cool, but the T7200@2GHZ might be a bit of a bottle neck with 4850's. :p

Plus money is tight right now so I'm gonna have to wait for just one set of 4850's. :(

I'll have to wait to run some benches and games with the 4850's till then.

and means you have to have the laptop ;)

I have a whitebook, but am gonna try pretty hard to get me a pair - which I will of course be installing myself. Just put an AW lid onto my whitebook so it can run with the big boys now! (and gosh does it look awesome)

seems as though AW have cancelled all the 4850's that have been ordered so this poll looks to be a mute point now

AW is still saying they will replace them for you though if you send your system in. They just won't send them to you to do yourself.

Yah I can read, but I think everyone needs to just settle down a bit. I asked yesterday in AW forums if I could get an upgrade and the answer was yes, you'll have to send it in though. And they're still listed on both AW USA and AW UK websites as options to pick.

Please elaborate. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on this machine and frankly, the ATI 9.6 drivers are amazing....(and don't need mob. modding - which I have found to always yield unstable results)

I have tweaked drivers as needed to try for least stuttering (no synaptics, 2.20 on sound, latest chipset driver from intel) otherwise they are off the OCZ cd that came with barebone(which will be same as AW drivers - both from Flextronics)

And I will check out the guide Moo. You put so much useful information up for us :)

Side note, would it be worth it to flash AW Bios and mess around with Command Center on my whitebook? Or not worth the trouble? (of course I currently lack the CC software if anyone wants to help me out there)

Is it proprietary to AW? Why wouldn't OCZ have given us this....
