    Hey everyone,
I bought my M17 in late March 2009. Now I decided to do some upgrades (a second graphic card and warrenty).
After my third attempt (1 mail without answer 2 calls, first without any outcome) I reached a guy who gave me a disappointing answer:
Since Alienware was absorbed /fusioned with Dell, I cannot get an upgrade from my 1 year warrenty. When I bought the system both the website (from which I ordered) and a person from Alienware (don't know the name, called before order to ask some things) told me I could upgrade my warrenty later on.
But the person I just talked to told me, that if I could proof to them that this option was offered to me at this point, they would pretty much have to upgrade my warrenty.

Does anyone know how I could do that?

Basically what they are doing is ripping their customers off.
Besides the possibility to upgrade warrenty, I was assured that there will be new graphic cards available for the M17. In fact they are not (the couple, not openly available 4850's were just to clear out of existing M17).

Hope anyone can help me out.

    Thx!

Unfortunatly you are out of luck.

The old M17 system is discontinued/End of Life.

Unless you have it written on paper and signed by a Dell rep that you can upgrade your warranty later on, there is nothing you can do.

I had the same problem, even tried it via legal assistence only to be disappointed.

Just pray nothing breaks in your M17 :) (handle it with care, add good thermal paste to CPU/GPU and buy a good cooler and maybe even adjust your bottom cover to allow more air to the hardware). Do anything that extends the laptops lifespan :D.

Thx for the quick answer, seems like I have no chance then...
I already undervolted the CPU and right now am running without cover ontop of a NC 2000, so the temps are fine (especially since I only have a single 3870 up to now. But that is hopefully going to change. I asked them to sent me the prices of all available grafic card upgrades for me (the rep could not get any answer from the depot right away). I'm also going to order a spare backcover, to modify it with a big mesh (thx for uploading a tutorial).
Did you get your M17 already equipped with the 4850's ?

I'd suggest to try selling your system and buying one of the new Alienware M17x systems to replace it which you'll be able to extend your warranty on as it's a full Dell product (although I'd still suggest to go with a 3 or 4 year complete care warranty right off the bat to avoid any hassle).

I was lucky enough to find a pair of 4850's on ebay :).

If you need a hand with the cover, just send me a PM.

Sounds like a reasonable idea, but I don't have the money to pay for a new M17x. I will have to take care of my M17 as best as I can...
