Hey guys, I haven't seen much about this feature.

I saw it on a video somewhere and someone talk about it in a review. But has anyone used it? How well does it work?

I mean it sounds like a pretty cool feature especially for school.

I don't really like it, but that could be just me. It doesn't work at all in the dark, which is where I usually am so I don't use it. I thought it would be a lot better I'm not going to lie. Maybe some other people had better luck with it.

Yeah I was afraid that many people would say something like that. Darkness is the main problem with a lot of face recognition.

It worked pretty well for me when the room was lit, but like airplaneman, I'm usually in low light situations, so I don't use it much. When it was using it, it normally took it a few seconds to startup and recognize my face, by which time I could have already typed in my password anyway.

Do you still have the option to enter a password on startup if the facial recognition doesnt work?

I also use my laptop in low-light or back-lit, neither of which works well with the camera.

I disabled the camera (Fn-F9) and just use my username/pw to log in.

Yes. This is actually how it first registers your face. The AlienSense box will appear and will try to detect a face. It will put a blue alienhead outline around your face, and if it doesn't recognize you, you have to log in normally and then it will save the facial information to your user profile.

it takes awhile to get used to you, mine did, but now it signs me in pretty fast. i raised the brightness on the camera so it seems to work better. i do use the light in the room though.

Mine rarely works. Thinking about turning the camera off, but maybe I will turn the brightness up on the camera and give it another try.

Works good for the most part, I love it. It's nice to be able to just sit down in front of your computer, and be logged in before you've even had time to think about it. And if it doesn't work, you can just enter your password normally, so I don't really see any downside to it - just a nice little bonus.

haha....yah, I actually got comments about that part...sitting in front of my computer, looking at the screen, and suddenly logging in. A guy standing in the same room was like "?!?! That that computer just recognize your face and logged you on?". I was like "yep!" Then he was like "that's just too geeky!!"

Ha! If it did not give that message to me, then I am very certain you have nothing to worry about - faces don't come much worse than mine hehehe. lol I wonder if the reason face recognition works so well on my laptop is because its very easy for Aliensense to recognize my dog-ugly face...

Has anyone tried taking a picture of themselves and printing out and then put it over your face and see if it recognises?

    Good way to steal someone's m17x =]

I haven't tried myself, but I heard of people trying to spoof the m17x that way and failed. I read the Aliensense seeks a full three dimensional image....

    Thats good,

I know some people who have personal safeboxes that use face and I've just printed a picture of them and placed it in front of the safe and it opens.

It is all legal. Your allowed to pick into your own house , your own padlocks etc.

Just don't pick other people's locks without their permission, that will make them angry :(.

Been picking for about 3 years now. I can usually get through my front door in about 4 seconds. Most padlocks in about 3.

    Its a neat skill to have ;) Just don't go breaking the law ;) ;) ;) ;)

It works insanely good in decent light..logs you in in like a second, but it doesn't work worth a damn if the lighting is dim. Takes a while for the service to start up right after the system turns on, but if you log off or lock the computer, it's quite fast.

Currently using the 9pc government lock pick set and its amazing.

If you give me your email i'll send you a e-book where you can read over and see if you want to buy one.

As everyone has said, it works like a champ in good lighting.

And I read somewhere where a M17x owner did try to defeat the Aliensense program with a high resolution, full color print of his face, and it would not work. It didn't even find the face in the print. He said later an AW rep actually emailed him, saying Aliensense seeks a full three dimensional face, not simply an image.

Down the road, I am hoping Aliensense goes a step further and requires not only 3D, but an accurate thermal reading as well. In other words, a wax figure would no longer suffice....

I turned off facial recognition on my machine right after I got it. I'm always in less then adequate lighting situations anyways.

ill miss the fingerprint reader :S since i have it on my dv9500 i'll have to get used to facial recognition...

The cool thing about the FP reader is that i hardly ever typed a password anymore on any sites or applications that required a password, i just swiped the finger and it logged in.. which is AWESOME! The facial recognition cant do that? or can it?

Yup, definitely works best in a well lit room.

I believe that the m17x should have been equipt with a led light beside the camera. Or at least have the backlight from the screen go bright enough to light up your face.

I am growing to love it. Its definitely pretty accurate. Thanks for the tip about low light. Curious though... it looks like the webcam has its own lightsource... why wouldn't it just light that up to see you?

And fingerprint readers... *grrr* Don't get me started.

    lightsource?

If your talking about the white led, that is just there to let you know the camera is on. It isn't bright enough to illuminate anything.

Actually, it can be fooled pretty easily... I did it right after setting it up and fooled it just by taking a picture of ny face with my cellphone and getting it close enough to the camera so that the size would match and it logged me in a few seconds later.

I was able to do it at the highest recognition strength, just try it and see for yourselves... you don't even need a high quality camera in the cellphone... mine's a SE W595 and it's picture quality did just fine for fooling AlienSense.

Last night I tried as you suggested. I took a recent picture with with my DSi, in good lighting so my face was well illuminated but not overexposed. It didn't work. I would try to grab my face, but never allowed me to log on.
I did find a decent photo I had on me, so I tried again with that. Samething, the blue alien head would surround my face, but not log me in.
The instant I put my own face on cam, I was logged in....
