Hello-
I just bought a new Alienware M17x two days ago. It hasn't even been delivered yet. I configured the system with 4GB's of RAM because I didn't want to pay for the 8GB upgrade. I'm trying to find out how difficult it is to swap out the RAM once I receive the system. Usually, RAM is easily accessible on a laptop, but I don't know about the Alienware since I've never owned one before. Will I have to rip the thing apart in order to do this or is it relatively simple? I also saw some pictures on how to install RAM on and M17x at 4help.alienware.com, but the underside of their system does not appear to look like the one I bought. (Maybe that was an older chassis or something). Anyhoo, I'd appreciate any input on the matter. I want to try and evaluate the difficulty level before I drop the $400.00 on the 8GB kit.
Thanks![]()

The_Moo made a "How to change your M17x CPU" guide that should tell you how to go about opening the bottom of the laptop at the beginning of it video.
Then all you would need to do is swap it out.

Thanks, man. I did see Moo's CPU guide. And I was watching for the RAM location throughout that video but didn't see it. I'm sure it will be evendent once I get the service panel off.
Thanks for your help, brother. -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
moo's guide doesn't say nothing about replacing the ram but all he needs to do is remove the battery, remove the hdd. cover with a philips screwdriver and there is a little rectangular metal cover with 1 screw that is the memory cover

Sweet! You rock

lol... that's the most simple upgrade on the m17x wait to see how to replace the screen
i have a question what is your system configuration?
-
i want to see that =o
-
My system config is:
Nebula Red - Special Edition – Anodized Aluminum
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q9000 2.0GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
17-inch WideUXGA 1920x1200 (1200p)
Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 280M, 2GB – SLI® Enabled
I'm glad the RAM is so easy to upgrade... I was worried that I'd have to do what Moo did on the CPU swap!! -
If you're complaining about that...Just to inform you, they build every single M17x to order. It's not like most laptop companies where you just order it and it's ready made, all Dell computers on their website are completely customizable as you'll have seen so they have to build it to order...
-
Oh, no complaints here, Sir. I was fully aware of the wait time involved. I was just trying to get a plan together for my RAM upgrade by speaking with more "Alienware savvy" people that me

Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
Dreamtheater or anyone here, I will upgrade my memory too. Where can I find the best price for them?
-
Hey there
This is what I intend to purchase:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231295
this is absolutely the cheapest 8GB kit I could find. And I'm sure it's going to work in my new Alienware. Would someone please look at this memory and validate that I am good to go with this purchase? It would really help me and Rengsey.
Thanks
