    Hi Everyone,
It's been a long while since I sat down and began to read all the daily posts on this forum. You may remember that I owned a few laptops (m15x and m9750), and neither one turned into a successful story. After looking at the new m17, and reading all the posts, it doesn't seem like there has been much improvement. Just out of curiosity, have there been any major issues with the m17x?? Is it the most stable notebook Alienware has to offer???

    Thanks,
    Gabe

Hey Gabe. Just wondering, what are you referring to when you say the M17 is unstable?

I haven't had any issues that weren't caused by me, i.e., BSOD from OCing too high.

M17, only go for it if your going for a cheap config.

If your going for a high end one go for xoticpc or killer notebooks. AW charges through the roof for upgrades and their support is absolutely terrible.

yeah i would only upgrade something that cant be cahnged after skimp on things like RAM, HDD, and CPU as you can still update all of them in the future

This statement doesn't seem to hold water from a monetary standpoint. I built a system at XoticPC with the exact configuration as the one I bought from Alienware. It came to $1,984. This is with no RAM or HDD.

Cheapest 2GB DIMM on Newegg is $45.
Cheapest 160GB HDD on Newegg is $60.

XoticPC is $115 more than I paid Alienware ($1,974), plus I would have to install the RAM, HDD, OS, Drivers, all that stuff myself. Some folks don't want to or just plain don't know how to do that stuff.

EDIT: The X9100 setup is also ~$100 more at Killernotebooks than through Alienware.

ON THE OTHER HAND, ~$100 is worth having the ability to OC from the get-go without worrying about warranty issues.

well said turbodtalon. some people will bash AW about their prices simply because it's AW.

I think the M17 is fairly priced, on par with the other similar notebooks.

shouldn't be a problem with 64bit OS. the RAM itself will cost you an arm and a leg though..

This thread is about whether or not the M17x is stable, not about pricing.

Anyways... from what I've seen the M17x seems pretty stable as we haven't had anyone come here yet with problems. Either that or the M17x didn't sell as well as Alienware expected so that is why they released the M17

i think AW released the m17 to have an ATI based rig, not to mention with Montevina etc.

b2t, m17x definitely seems the most stable/problem-free system so far.

Ever since the m17x was released, I heard *nothing* regarding any compaints about build quality, temps, etc. I think it is a flawless notebook.

yep. only issue ever heard was the BluRay thing, but that's not specifically related to the m17x.

Bluray issue was software related (WHQL drivers issue) and not having right player software. But of course that was easily resolved.

To me, the bulk of complaints about AW are their CS, musical chairs with ship dates and the M15x issues.

The M17 is a competitively priced unit based on the 840 architecture and is stable. I put together three of them a few weeks back for a client and definitely solid construction IMHO.

The M17x, from what I've researched, is pretty rock solid but based on the older Santa Rosa chip set, but Dual SLI 9800's is good stuff.

I have had my m17x for a few months, and have yet to have a problem that wasn't caused by something outside of the original configuration from the factory. I have to say, I really love my m17x!
