Hi everyone,
I've recently discovered an issue with the M17X that most will probably run into eventually. Assuming that you're computer is set to "Install Updates Automatically, " you will inevitably install an update that breaks the webcam and causes your touch control lights to go out. I wish I could pin point the exact update, but it's hard to pin point. I've already run into the issue twice, and I thought this would be helpful.
My Webcam is Missing (facap, FastAcces Video Capture is the only device):
1. Uninstall the integrated webcam driver
2. Restart the Computer
3. Wait for Vista to recognize the webcam and install it
4. Reinstall the integrated webcam driver
My Touch Controls are now dead (They won't light up)
1. Uninstall Command Center
2. Shut down the computer (do no restart)
3. Power on the computer (the touch control lights will come on)
4. Reinstall Command Center
If you should see this message, "COM Surrogate is using Command Center," press ctrl + alt + del, start task manager, select the process tab, and end both processes of dllhost.exe. This should allow you to click "Retry" and remove Command Center.
Do not click "Ignore"

So your saying a Windows update killed them ?. Maybe its one of those KVM updates or something along those lines , ive seen those in other windows updates and never installed them as i knew they were hardware related.
-
If I were to take a stab in the dark, I would say that it's a .Net update. However, I can't tell which one it is, being that I updated 3 different ones at the same time.

Guess you could just restore back to older image to find the culprit by doing them one at a time . I would actually like to know which one it is myself so i dont freak out when stuff stops working all of the sudden lol.

Hi - I have the exact camera issue; but I don't understand where you can uninstall the web cam driver if I only see the fasap. Can you give me more details? Thanks, Jim

FastAccess is a component of CommandCenter. It is installed to as part of the AlienSense Facial Recognition module.
Your Webcam driver is different. This is in your Programs & Features Control Panel - Integrated Webcam Driver, Creative Tech.
The driver can be found here:
Vista64
v1.1.1.1227 A00, Last Updated: 06/02/2009
Dell has not yet released a Win7 driver for this device. Until they do, use the Vista64 driver. -
Hi Batboy - That made sense; I went to Program & Features; however it's not listed there. My camera was working fine last week. I did a clean install to Windows 7 Saturday. Camera was missing for a bit. I did a complete shut down; when it came back up the camera was working fine. I left my LT on last night; and this morning I went to wake it up; got a black screen with cursor; got past that and into Windows; but camera is gone again. (some Window Update? I just now turned off auto). When I try to install the Vista driver it fails at 90%. Just says there was an error. CRAZY.....or am I crazy? Any ideas......thanks. Jim

What was the error?
-
Only says "an error occurred while installing the driver". This is during setting up software drivers now. Hits about 90% then errors out.
-
Correction: "An error occurred while setting up the driver"

Had that touch control problem in Vista (only installed 7 so not sure will it appear) Just rebooted and they worked again for me
