I really don't think anyone has a release date.... Sorry
It could be a week, it could be two months.

Well, Alienware said Q1 2008 on 11/19. There is current speculation based on some possible discussions between members of NBR and Alienware employees that it could be released in the next 2 weeks or so. On the other hand, there was similar speculation about a possible release around the end of January and then around the middle of February, neither of which obviously happened.

Yeah, close and move to the m17x thread. If there was release info there would be a new topic entitled:

    "OMG.. I HAZ TEH M17X DATE!!!11!!1"

Release date has been moved to the end of April due to production delays. It looks to me like Dell is going to get a big head start on production with the M1730. Seems to me that Dell is obviously exerting some influence on what happens at Alienware. Hate to see that happen. Really sucks. By the time the Alienware starts getting in users hands, doubtful it will stand out above everything else. Seems to me the m17x is virtually identical to the M1730 (hmmmm both start with m17, imagine that). Other than of course, the M1730 have the physics processor and the Alienware more than likely not having option for built in cellular broadband if history is a relevant predictor of the future.

I'm wondering why I don't go ahead and order the Dell M1730 and be done with it. Very quickly losing faith in Alienware to act independently of Dell.

the m1730 offers more options with better warranty from dell.

the m17x will have a better build quality with less keyboard flex i am guessing.

overall the m1730 will be faster because of it's physics card and overclockable cpu.

It seems like crap to me aswell, why Dell would care if the M1730 has a "head" start I don't know. From a total financial point of view for Dell and Alienware (same company) - it is best if they have 2 laptops to offer customers rather than one. That way they can meet more customer demands rather than potential customers looking elsewhere because the M1730 cannot meet certain criteria.

I certainly don't think it is a case of Dell wanting to shift more M1730's. With the M17x they will get even more sales, not the same as just having the M1730 on offer.

Physics cards are not a selling point. Nvidia bought Ageia and announced that all 8 series gpu's will become hybrid PPU's through a software download.

hardware vs software? you cannot expect the software ppu to be better than hardware based.

Can't the person from Alienware already figure that out though based on your posts already in this email? You're still passing along the same info allegedly so what's the difference. Seems you have already let the cat out of the bag if this is legitimate info. And, unless its someone you have a personal relationship with, what do you care? Did they tell you to keep it private? Which if they did you've blown that anyway.

It should work the same as Ageia cards. It's the software that's handling all the calculations... You won't notice a difference between the two. It'll be a generation or two before games push physics to the extent that a dedicated card is needed.

physics in games right now are pretty good still especially with the Havok engine. It'll be far too much hassle and money to make a dedicated physics card i think. Nvidia will probably just integrate it with the gpu's.

the problem lies in that the gpu will start handling the ppu. what part of the gpu is going to be doing this? what about a game that is graphically tasking the gpu as it is, are you supposed to sacrifice visuals for physics?

it sounds like any other software encoding or related. tasks simply run better through hardware rendering rather than software.

i have my doubts. it sounded like nvidia freaked out about "another card" that can dominate the market like the gpu has done so they bought them out.

i doubt someone at alienware just felt like telling you, unless you work there, or work with dell. because they can get in a lot of trouble for that. and they will end up finding out who it was just from what you posted

I know from alienware after asking their agents on chat a million times, (i don't know if they say truth) That the "less expensive" M15X will be coming out with the M17X, and the M17X will be coming out in "A Few months" I asked how long is a few months. and he didn't answer. Wellguess it might be end of march, maybe even christmas. I hope not.

dell is more well known then alienware, and dells are more budget friendly, and a hell of alot more ppl are buying dells then alienware so no less was expected from them, its all about the money.

Flam3h's logic still holds, though. While individual sales of the M1730 will be less if you have the competing m17x out at the same time, total sales of the M1730 and m17x would outnumber sales of the sole M1730 and, in the end, provide more cash to Michael Dell

    Alienware UK ... mid april
Alienware US ... generally a month ahead of UK

m17x in US would surely come out in the next 10 days or so and still be in First Q

It's always been the same. AW - USA released the M15X a month before the UK/Europe release?
In theory the M17X should be released by the end of March, to be released within the Q1, so April for the UK would make sense.

Of course, you realize that: (1) as we have seen, different AW sales agents have different information; and (2) if you bugged them that many times, the sales agent may have just told you that in order to get you to go away for awhile, especially if it was clear that you were not going to be ordering something now.
