I want to know if it is possible to do so. And i want to know if it could be done by somebody who has never opened up a laptop before. I am going to order an M17X next week, but have to cut out the blu-ray for now. But want to get it later on if possible, thanks.

yes i have it done you can purchase a blue ray burner uj-235a from ebay like i did or get it from dell, to replace it is not to easy since you need to take the laptop apart but is pretty easy if you follow moo's cpu guide that is all you need to take it apart

There's an article in LAPTOP magazine from a few months ago that shows you how to replace ALL the typically upgradable parts in a laptop. None of them, save the screen were difficult, as long as you can follow simple instruction and have the correct tools. (typically a screw driver.)

The DVD drive is anything but simple to replace in the new m17x, it is buried deep inside the laptop and required an almost complete dis assembly to access (then i didnt secure the display cord correctly and spent 2 hours troubleshooting). If you going to do it yourself, be sure to sepereate all the different screws so that you know where they are supposed to go, and make sure you use the proper tools, non magnetized jewelers screwdrive set is the best IMO.

If that's true then that's just backwards engineering. Once someone makes thing simple, it makes no sense to make them complicated again.

I had an XPS M1710 prior to the m17x, i do wish it was just a single screw and slide right out like it was with that, but that wasent the case. Im guesssing they did it this way so that the system looks nice, instead of having a drive with its own faceplate on the side it is completely insde the system casing.

I think i may just include the blu-ray player instead of going through the hassle of completely dissembling the laptop. I'm not going for the high res screen though, i hope that's not a mistake.

If you don't get the high res screen than getting a blu-ray player makes no sense.

Can you replace the 1440 x 9000 screen with the hi-res? There are many sites selling 1900 x 1200 laptop screens.

It is! Dont order a computer of the AW caliber anyway other than maximum resolution.

the lower res screen is still technically high def isn't it, 720P. But Ya i could just hook up to a tv. But i am now putting a hold on my order because i want to see this M15X. Probably get better options for what im looking for, for cheaper.

LOL, it IS HD. And to tell the truth, 720p still produces a pretty good picture--especially on a screen under 30".

of course since blu-rays are all encoded in 1080p unless you get the 1920x1200 screen your not going to get the best results out of your blu-ray drive.
