    Hey folks,

Am I correct in assuming that the M17/M17x will NOT be able to upgrade to a processor newer than the QX9300? I'm guessing that the QX9300 is the most powerful and last of its generation/family and that the next-generation Core i7 mobile processors won't be able to fit.

you would need to see the mobo specs fot the units and compare to the one now that has the i7 in it.
doubtfull the M17 would, but not sure of the M17x.

M17x will be incompatible with Capella (mobile i7/i5) unless dell offers a motherboard upgrade which is unlikely but not entirely impossible.

There is a qx9500 (2,93ghz stock clock) expected. But i7 will need a new mobo as said.

I know this much is true! The M17 won't go pass the QX9300 due to the chipset! PM45, The I-7's uses X58 desktop chipset, which I don't think either of the 2 system would work! The I-7 is a power hogg 130watts which is the real desktop processor. There might be a new QX9??, on it's way? or maybe not!

The OP was talking about an upgrade to the mobile variant of i7 though, not the desktop version, and the M17x is using the Nvidia 9400M chipset.

I dont think the M17x has a PM45 chipset, but it has the Nvidia MCP79 chipset. I don't see any Intel chipset drivers for the PM45 listed on the Dell website, only Nvidia MCP79.

Seems there is some trouble in Holland/Europe. My rep has got many complaints from people who are in phase 2 : pre-production for over a week now, and don't seem to get any further.
Yesterday he mailed me that my system was in production already, now he is not so sure about that anymore. He also told me that if I would order a system now I would get an EDD of end of June.
This is getting very frustrating and annoying.
Somehow I get a feeling that there is a serious lack of parts here in Europe just to keep the US customers happy.
I really am not very happy at the moment.
Anyway, he will mail me when he knows what the problem is.

Sorry: I posted this in the wrong thread, can a mod delete this?
I repost this in the order status thread.

The M17x and possibly the M17 MIGHT be compatible with any future dual and/or quad core processors that are coming up, but as stated they may well be the last in their family. (I'm not the right person to ask about upcoming mobile processors)

However, I can say for definite that neither laptops will be compatible with the upcoming i7 moblie processors, unless Alienware/Dell offers some sort of a motherboard upgrade, which is very unlikely (but not impossible).

There's a wiki regarding Centrino talking about more Montevina based processors coming but who knows if they will ever be released.

Calpella is i5 not i7. It's the mobile brother of Lynnfield.

It's also worth skipping and waiting for the die shrink in 2010. The Extreme Edition Clarksfield quad is the highest clocked of the three to be released @ 2.0Ghz...though it will OC itself to 3.2Ghz on one of it's cores. It also has a TDP of 55W, and lacks the integrated graphics on chip.

It won't be worth going after the i5 mobiles until the 32-nm quads come out.

Sort of like when the switch from Pentium 4 to Pentium M. Speeds when down but performance went up...for the most part.

Even so Clarksfield isn't more than a short-term transition chip being put out to make a little extra cash until the full spec 32-nm i5 quads come out and lose the 55w power draw.

I wonder how close the QX9500 is to the QX9300. Is it based on the 9300 and will the QX9500 have the same OC limit or will the ceiling be higher than the 9300?

QX9500 will never exist. It's too close to Calpella now for Intel to bother. Thing about the new capella is, Intel won't have an integrated solution for the 1st 3 processors (probably not until anandale, the dual core 32nm variant). Nvidia is rumored to have about 80% of the future capella notebooks covered with their chipset. Perhaps the Nvidia based M17x and M980 were designed for this change?

Thanks for all the info, guys. I'm guessing the QX9300 is an already capable processor. Just would have been nice to know that it could be upgraded.

    Hi,
Currently, the Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme Processor QX9300 is the highest processor available that's compatible.

    Thanks,
