Hi, I am just wondering, for the dell alienware M17x, would there be a large difference in performance between 8GB 1066MHz and 1333MHz? Or would the difference be hardly noticeable and buying the more expensive RAM would be pointless?

what cpu are you getting?? imo there is not a huge difference except the 1333 *may* allow you to overclock higher.. but it is not a given

    keyword.

Tests by mandrake have proved the 1066 being a LITTLE less stable when OC'ing.

    Not OC'ing? No difference

Not completely really because mandrake don't tried using the more common divisors :D (let's say that it's half tested).

But with 8GB ram if you have the extra money, don't care in spending it, don't have nothing more to upgrade i would say that is a option due the fact that it's basically the best 8GB ram you can get.

No performance increase but at least you get the fancy numbers :D

i would be getting the best core, the extreme quad core 3.53ghz

im going into grade 12, still at home so have no real expenses, i have about 6k saved up atm...and a 2 year old comp, and need a gaming laptop by december, so i'll be spending as much as i have when the time comes to buy lol, if 1333 RAM doesn't make any difference though I would want to know so i don't waste money, thats why i asked

hehe, it was a toss up between a car, or gaming laptop, as i hate driving...laptop won ^^

about OC'ing, i have never really OC'ed other than moving sliders on my desktops evga overclocking facility

atm i am thinking I will want to OC when i get the laptop to improve performance, OC'ing doesn't have any major downsides does it?

TBH i don't think that anyone can justify the extra $200 for 1333 ram.

I say save your money :p

Better yet, take the lowest RAM config available and upgrade it on your own. You'd probably save a fair bit doing that.

Actually lol to go from 4gb-8gb its about 800 dollars lol and the truth is no the performance is very slight... and you know what other performance is very slight the difference between 4gb and 8gb of ram as of right now... there is no need for 8gb ram

You can't find 8GB DDR3-1333 to buy aftermarket.

But anyway i would pick the corsair DDR3-1066 aftermarket for $650... Much better deal :p

It's true for gaming but not true to everything :p .

ya i know, i will need the laptop to last me for playing games for about 3 years though, my current desktop has 3gb ram and is 2 years old, dragonage origins, which is coming out later this year, has recomended requirements of 4gb ram, so i want to put as much ram as possible into the laptop to futureproof it

ya, it would be a better deal, but i have never owned a laptop before, and the only parts i have replaced on my desktop are gpu, power supply and a new hd, so i don't really know how to install ram, plus i would hate to mess something up : /

You basically have to unscrew 2 screws and put the new RAM.

Really easy IMO and you have guide in alienware website.

I will also upgrade my Ram in the future... Keep in mind the price will drop drastically in time and Ram is very very easy to install

Replacing RAM is one of the easiest things to do in a laptop. Actually, it is *the* easiest and safest modification you can do to your laptop. There are lots of guides all over the place, but the gist of it is to remove the back cover, pop the RAM into an angled position, remove the stick, replace the stick, and then work backwards from there. It's really easy.

    8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz [add $1,000 or $30/month1]
    The fastest mobile memory available!

Saving $250 don't look like a bad idea for me anyway.

    EDIT:
I said 1333 but u r pretty right anyway because i noticed that a g.skill 1333 module just appeared in newegg (was not there last week lol).

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231266

Ok... 1333 for the same price of 1066.

Now i can say go for it.

At least u r not paying a premium for no extra performance :D .

No kidding lol.... and you wait a few months until you actually may need them and those will have dropped at least 250 dollars in price

8GB is honestly not worth it at ALL right now. You will hardly see ANY performance benefit from it. Wait until 1. the price of 4GB sticks comes down so 8GB is a lot cheaper, and 2. when 8GB will actually make a difference. That's just my opinion on it anyway.

1333MHz is COMPLETELY pointless unless you're going to be doing hardcore overclocking. Unless you overclock the FRONT SIDE BUS (in Extreme processors, unless you want to really push it far, you will only overclock the multiplier) the RAM will be downclocked to 1066MHz anyway. The only advantage of 1333MHz RAM as has been already said is that it's a little, little bit more stable when overclocking the FSB.

I'd just go for the 4GB 1066MHz and wait for the cost of 2x4GB sticks to come down.

Some marketing type will no doubt try to sell it as 1337 MHz just for that reason...
