when you plug the AC adapter in the back of your M17x does it make a lot of noise when it's charging? It's like a constant buzzing sound. Mine does that everytime i connect the ac adapter to the laptop and it's pretty annoying.

ive seen some adapters sound like flies while others are silent.... but i would call Dell and get a replacement...

you can claim a faulty AC adapter and get a new one

thanks for the reply. i'll try a replacement and see if it's better. The buzzing sound comes from the back of the laptop where the ac adapter connects to the laptop. I hope it's not a problem with the connection on the laptop.

no the sound is just comming from the back of the laptop where the ac adapter connects to the back of the laptop. I can't work out if it's comming from the ac adapter or the back of the actual laptop. Tried moving it about no difference. I'll have to see what happens when i get a new ac adapter. Do i contact Dell or Alienware about theis problem?

I have the same problem with mine, the engineer came out on Monday and replaced the adaptor which initially seemed to stop it. But i noticed last night it is buzzing again similar to before so it will probably need the motherboard replacing from what the Dell/Alienware support people as the power jack is on the main board.

My ac adapter makes a slight buzzing sound. Its from the adapter unit itself, not where it connects to the laptop for me. I never thought much of it though. Is this actually confirmed to be an issue of some sort? I've been fine so far with it the way it is. I figure I'll just let CC take care of it if there actually does end up bein a problem with it :p

mines not coming from the box that's totally quiet. mines comming from where the ac adapter connects to the back of the laptop. so it's either the connection on the laptop or the connector on the cable from the ac adapter that's making the sound. It's constanly buzzing and it's pretty annoying.

My power adapter (the box thingy) is making weird noises when it's connected to the power surge as well as the laptop.

Update on buzzing noise, had the motherboard replaced last week but the buzzing noise is still really bad when on AC power, soon as power is off noise disappears. Spoke to Alien Tech and they say its normal for the machine...

After a lot of heated debate they have agree to send another machine but if this doesn't work i am spannered with the noise problem it seems.

Can some people test their machines with the power on and off to see if this noise is normal. The buzzing is constant when the machine is idling or running fast but disappears completely when not plugged in.

Thanks, just ran the battery down, it is silent when re charging, but as soon as the battery is 100% it will buzz again. But only in the central part of the machine where the ac adaptor plugs in.

I plan on calling support about the extremely annoying buzzing tomorrow. It happens everywhere and every outlet.

I can get the noise to stop if i use this one outlet that is connected to a batter back up, however that is across the room and doesnt stop it from happening with travel.

Buzzing from the box itself I wouldn't worry to much about.
It's likely just the laminations on the transformer vibrating, not unusual for transformers.

Buzzing from the laptop itself I dunno....
Have you tried muting your speakers to see if it is a interference issue and coming out of them?

Just for the record mine is fine on both accounts.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but Im new to the board and this was the best fit I could find to the problem Im having. I bought an Alienware M17x from Microcenter on Wednesday, and am experiencing the same issue.

It seems as though the laptop itself is making a buzzing noise but only when the adapter is plugged in, it disappears completely on battery power. Also worth noting, the sound continues even when the machine is off if the battery is being charged.

Daz7781 did you ever get yours resolved? Im very happy with the machine otherwise but with their tight 7 day return policy Id like to get to the bottom of the issue sooner rather than later.

    Thanks,
    Tim

I also purchased the M17x from Microcenter a few days ago. Unfortunately my buzzing is coming from the video cards whenever games are played (sometimes when a movie is being played, sometimes it goes away). I also started to notice it buzzing even on idle, tho it's lower in sound. I read that this happens on some Nvidia cards, so I'm not sure what to do about it. Kinda dissappointed having this problem from such an expensive machine. Hope I don't get the buzzing from the back as well. Seriously considering returning this badboy. Excellent system besides all the buzzing.

The GPUs in my M17x dont screach at all(280s) and i found it strange others said theres did and that its normal based on the tech. If its that obvious though i would just ask for an exchange or full refund as to me thats a defective product and also from the sound of it(no pun) something dell will not just fix seeing as its "normal".

Good point. I'll probably take it in this weekend and exchange it tho I don't think my local Micro Center has anymore in stock. I picked up the only one.

I have two GTX 260's in mine. Not sure if that would make a difference. I really hope I can get a replacement no questions asked. It's a really nice lappy.

Dreambrother, I've got the two 260s as well and while the back of the unit makes the noise when plugged in I have no noise from my videocards at all, They should definitely take that back assuming they even have one to exchange with, which is the problem I think I'll run into.

Im going to try and record the noise mine makes and post it after work.

Here is the noise, when I converted the file from m4a to mp3 and reduced the quality to be under size limit it killed the volume so you may have to turn your speakers way up. But if anyone could tell me what this could be and if its normal I'd appreciate it. I unplug and replug about half way through so you can see the difference.

Yeah that kind of sounds like what I'm hearing. I just called Micro Center and they said they would take it back and replace it for me. They also said since it's defective I won't have to pay a restocking fee if i just return it. Tho this machine is too damn sweet to simply just return :D I'm hoping if I do decide to get a new unit it'll be a perfect working one. Hate to have to keep doing the return dance. I'll post an update as soon as I get back. Thanks for posting that sound bite!
