Hi! Proud owner of a m17x here

Ive run into a small problem with the Alienware command center/fusion/fx/sense applications not launching.

When i try to run any of them, they only show up as an active, running process in the task manager, but fail to start the user interface.

I run vista home premium with stock settings, and command center 64bit version 1.0.6.0.

And one more thing, McAfee identifies "OSCust.exe" as a trojan and quarantines it for some reason, though it really seems like a legit Alienware program. It lies in the folder "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\OEM".
I believe McAfee is the standard alienware AV-tool, so is there anyone else who have the same problem?

    - Thanks

MCAfee is the AV that comes with the laptop but I highly recommend buying a better one such as Kaspersky or BitDefender or AVG

IIRC Mcafee has a reputation to be a very reliable AV, no?

My favorite antivirus is NOD32, from eset.com. It's VERY fast. Unlike most AV programs that drag your system down, you can be running a full scan, and you won't even be able to tell. Plus, in independent tests, it's beaten both McAfee and Symantec in accuracy. It's a bit expensive at $40/year, but still... it's worth it. Oh, and I've been running this on Win7 x64 since the first public beta, and I've had NO issues.

BTW... I wouldn't buy their Security package... just the NOD32 AV. It's a bit hard to find the home version (the front page links to the expensive business version), but if use the Products link at the time, it can be found.

    Hi ID4,
I would highly recommend disabling, or possibly removing MCAfee and trying again. If the command center interface runs, then you may want to renable/reinstall MCAfee and adjust it accordingly. Unfortunately, the M17X experiences performance issues with MCAfee, and you may want to look into other Antivirus software.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

    Thanks for the replies guys

By the way, I found commandcenter version 2.0.1.0 is up on dells support page! Looks like im running the earlyest version at the moment, durr.

And is there a way to make McAfee ignore certain exes? Because there are no options to mark the OSCust program as a safe/trusted program for McAfee so it just keeps quaranteening it every time it runs a search in the C:/windows catalog.

Imho i like McAfee, it is descrete and search fairly fast, its only this one issue im having.

    Hi ID4

I let McAfee Quarantine OSCUST.EXE in the end, and it has had no adverse affects (after trying the same as your to Restore it each time I gave up but with no issues).

Also (contrary to popular belief) I have stopped disabling McAfee whilst playing games, and again had no noticeable effect (I think it knows via its Game Mode detection). In fact when I disabled it I had more issues with background warnings popping up occasionally which caused the games to minimise if I clicked on lower right of the screen where the popup as in the background - not good during a firefight.

    Cheers
