Actually compared to the 15x you are only paying an extra $400 for the 2nd 8800 so it's not that bad. I'll be ordering mine shortly. My hope is that the phase game will allow AW enough time to get the real 8800 drivers out before it ships in June. This thing will look nice sitting all lit up at Quakecon this year.

On the m15x, for less than the price of the dual 8600M GTs on the m17x, you can get a single 8800M GTX, which will be much, much faster.

Know how you feel ;). Still, upgradability and power were the main reasons I chose my desktop over a notebook. Still no quad-cores in notebooks.

Wow, talk about full size keyboard; that's pretty cool!

It's also nice that it's black but to be honest I think the m15x is already bulky enough - even if I could trade my m15x for the m17x I probably wouldn't as I don't find it practical.

Well after viewing the "Network" videos and the releasing of the M17X i have noticed the following...

You can have three 5400rpm HDD's so 1.5Tb Storage

Reading the specs on the Extreme processor the FSB is stated as 800Mhz FSB... So is it faster than the 667Mhz extreme processor in the M15X?

It has a sub woofer which should add to the sound quality of the notebook.

Most stirking is the colour, mat black, and no apparent side lighting as per the M15X, this could be the bios fix issue or perhaps there isn't any option for this, who knows?

So with the apparent lack of Montevina, but more storage than other manufacturers (at the moment) is it worth $6015 fully loaded?

It all depends on your priorities ofcourse. If you want Mobile gaming/Video edition/or any other application that requires a powerful GPU and CPU with a great screen, then the M17X is worth it.

As I said in the other thread (I think it was the m17x owners thread which is now corrputed with a database error) the m17x's Command Centre doesn't show a light pipe zone and nor do any promotional images. I think it's fair to say that the light pipe is missing.

And, the other thing I said in that thread is that with the m17x's power, Montevina will probably add very little in terms of in-game performance. You may get better load times and better boot times (especially with the fast RAM), but if you're in game in Crysis, what's gonna have the bigger impact? DDR3 RAM or SLI 8800s?

Just get a m15x in black when Alienware offers it like that. I'm sure they will when the m17x starts shipping in a few weeks. Practical, powerful, portable and a lot cheaper. I might get one at the end of the year, but it won't be maxed, probably only a 9600M GT if Alienware offers it (they should by then), and then I'll upgrade to an 8800M GTX or 9800M GTX later on.

I don't know. It's a good thing that they released it. But, it might be safe to wait a little. We all remembered what happened with the m15x right?

But, hey, if you want it, go for it!! ;)

yeah GRBs right, montevina will do very little to gaming performance although since its so close, you might as well wait BUT probbaly youll have to wait another month after launch for it to actually ship to you im thinking.

I'm sure Alienware does, too. I'd doubt they'll let another launch like that happen, that's why they held off from releasing the m17x for so long.

But im thinking that the M17X will have less issues since theres been tonnes of 17inchers with SLI like the M1730 and im sure the guys at Dell may have provided some know-how to the guys at AW, since they are essentiallty the same laptop. Also the 17inch is much bigger providing better air-flow but i mean its huge, 4.8kg man..

Alright, since this question is going to be asked a billion times in the next few weeks, I'm putting a bit of work into this post.

"Is it worth it" is a very subjective question, and can't be answered except by the person asking. The closest I can get to answering this question is to compare it to a well known system in high-end laptops, the Sager NP9262. Thus, I've come up with two configurations, one mid-range, and one high-end, both as economically priced as I could make them. All prices taken from www.alienware.com and www.xoticpc.com.

    Mid-Range Configuration:

    Alienware m17x
    ............ Sager NP9262
    Dual 8600m GT ................FX1600M
    WUXGA ..........................WUXGA
    T8100 2.1 GHz ................E6850 3.0 GHz
    1 GB DDR2-667 RAM .........2 GB DDR2-667 RAM
120 GB HDD ....................120 GB HDD
Vista Home Premium .........Vista Home Premium
3 Year Warranty ..............3 Year Warranty
    Total: $2499 .................. Total: $2474

    High-End Configuration :

    Alienware m17x
    ............ Sager NP9262
Dual 8800m GTX ..............Dual 8800m GTX
    WUXGA ..........................WUXGA
    T9500 2.6 GHz ................Q6600 2.4 GHz
    1 GB DDR2-667 RAM .........4 GB DDR2-667 RAM
2x250 GB HDD RAID 0 .......2x250 GB HDD RAID 0
Vista Home Premium .........Vista Home Premium
3 Year Warranty ..............3 Year Warranty
    Total: $4523 .................. Total: $3734

    Size Details (Height*Width*Depth, Weight)
    Alienware m17x - 2.1*16.1*11.5, 10.5 lbs
    Sager NP9262 - 2.35*15.5*11.75, 11.55 lbs

    Miscellaneous:
Alienware m17x includes Smart Bay and Alien FX lighting.

Then again, battery life on the Sager sucks, plus it's using a desktop processor and looks much thicker and uglier.

I highly doubt that the Alienware has stellar battery life. Both are huge desktop replacements, and not meant to be away from the AC socket for long.

Looks can't be quantified, so no comment.

With Stealth Mode and BinaryGFX, there's an extra hour-hour and a half then what you'd normall find on the m17x, so we'll probably see somewhere between 2-3 hours of battery life and around double that with an extra SmartBay battery.

I don't the m17x has BinaryGFX. Take a look at the tech specs -- under the graphics section no mention of the integrated card is made; under the m15x they do mention it there.

edit: also, look at the m17x keyboard. The F7 key is blank, which is the BinaryGFX key on the m15x.

The m17x does not have BinaryGFX. Every laptop has "Stealth mode", just without the branding and instead called the "battery saver" Powermizer option.
