i'm trying to buy an M17x from Dell outlet and all the reps say that the Refurbished M17x laptops don't come with an integrated Webcam. Is this true? so no alien sense? I don't really use the Webcam but would be nice just in case i end up using it later.

I don't know what the rep is talking about. The camera is integrated into the screen by default.

Yep, sounds like the same incompetent style so famous among the Dell CS and TS members lately.
Don't buy that crap. It should come with a cam by default as Joker just said.

Yes, though I don't see why anyone (be it the tech support or the end user) would wanna do it in their right mind.

Yeah that would be pretty silly to go through the trouble of removing the plastic E2E and back cover just to get at the webcam. That rep. was definitely clueless.

    Joker,
Are you sure that the E2E plastic needs to be removed to access the cam?
Because if yes, then I have a brilliant(but risky) idea how to verify if the RGB LED by itself is matte. ;)

You have to remove the back of the monitor and back housing hand rest to get to it.

I had to transfer this over on my first system's screen swap.. You do not crack the front e2e... Just remove the back of the lid with alien head.

However you have to remove the keyboard and top panel to get to where it plugs in ect as well.

    So its a small P.I.T.A.

Is the E2E cover glued to the lid then?

Yeah pretty much 99% of the laptops today come with web camera. As Kilthro said you have to remove a whole bunch of stuff to actually get it out (it is possible tho), since it's integrated into the screen above the LCD. And even if you take out the plastic around screen you still have to go all the way inside the laptop to take the cables out, which most likely requires taking off the keyboard, bottom panel, etc.

The replacement screen didn't have a camera? AW swapped my screen out and it already had the camera in place. If that is the case then the rep. might be right, some of the refurbs may not have a camera.

Yea my replacement didnt have a web cam. had to transfer that, the cables, and bracket over to new screen/lid..

@Aikimox The front piece is glued and one piece to keep dust and all out.

As you can see in these pics. This is when i got my first screen replaced. The back of it minus external cap and hand grip. The front is sealed. As you see, no web cam at the top.. Had to move that over.

Well the way he wrote it: "all the reps say that the Refurbished M17x laptops don't come with an integrated Webcam" I got the impression they claimed none of them had the web cam. Which is I think strange, unless they deliberately pulled it out... :)
