no upgrade will be required, but rumor has it that 4870's will be coming to the new M17x

    Hi,
I don't know if there will ever be an upgrade that you're required to purchase. Upgrades are always optional. You might see ATI video cards as an optional upgrade, but the maximum processor and maximum ram choices are fairly set in stone. I do have confirmation that it will support an ATI card in single and crossfire mode. However, it is uncertain if, when, or what cards Dell Alienware will choose. Of course everything has to go through thorough testing before releasing it.

after i get it, as long as it keeps working im probly gonna have it for 2-10yrs.
i ussually dont upgrade or get something else unless absolutely nesassary. like now....my present computer is a really old Dell and its been pretty reliable but now its...just at that point. i cant hardly do anything on it anymore. i cant play any games on it and can barely use the internet.

is it ok to assume that the M17x All Powerfull will last me awhile?

I would think it will last a while. I would expect no less than 3 years. That's the current life span of the average laptop.

My 6 year old laptop still plays lord of the rings Mines of moria. Every thing on Low to med. res 68fps I went for a Max Out Laptop back then. I wish the dang thing was dual core.

By looking at your system it should last 4 year with a few upgrades later on 6 years.

    Dear Alienware Customer,

You are required to upgrade to core i7 for $1000.

If you do not upgrade, your notebook will vaporize.

    Best regards

A 6 year old laptop managing LoTRO at 68fps on medium? Even for a gaming laptop from 6 years ago, that's pretty impressive.

lol. I'm sure the original question is just worded wrong. The OP probably just needs to be more specific. Something like "With Windows 7 coming will I need to buy a SSD to take advantage of TRIM?"....or something along those lines.
