Every since I got my M17x, I had this sound stuttering problem in Windows 7 Ultimate RTM I got from MSDN. I didn’t get to test sound in Vista since first power up was a format, re partition raid 0 HDs and Windows 7 install.

Most of the time in games and while watching movies/playing music my sound stutters and interrupts. I’ve tried everything form reinstalling sound/chipset drivers to trying different windows 7 release and still no go. Computer it self does not freeze, Frame rate remains the same in all the games, temps are solid especially after A02 bios update, its just sound that interrupts all the time.

Still waiting on my qx9300 but for now Running P8600 @ 3.06 stable. Ran everything stock and still the same problem. Do you guys think it is just Windows 7 audio driver issue or something could be wrong with HW? I do not want to call dell because they do not support Windows 7 and all they are going to tell me is to install Vista which I do not want to do.

All drivers are latest from Dell with exception of Video 186.82
    Hybrid SLI is disabled bios
    9400M is disabled in bios

I know you mentioned you are using the latest drivers from Dell Prodigy - but I want to be sure... You did try the latest IDT release (6.10.0.6217, posted on 7/30) right?

    Its the initial Win7 driver...

I need to play a dvd to see if I have it in there.

Windows 7 runs alot better and I dont experience the breakup in sound as I did in vista. I listened to some music and all was good.

Ventrillo still has it every now and then.. Not as frequent but still there.. These notebooks have bad DPC latency issues that can cause the breaks in sound..

I will install power dvd tonight or tomorrow and test that out to see if it is ok.

I am using the HDaudio driver that was installed by Windows 7. I never touched it since I installed.

Try going with Kilthro's solution - use the default win7 driver and axe the Dell IDT driver. Uninstall IDT, reboot, have windows download the driver via windows update and you should be good to go. (hopefully)

interesting. I find mine working good. You did run a driver sweeper program to make sure all traces of the other ones were removed right?

Sorry to hear they did not work for you :-(

I'm also having audio crackling/stuttering when installing any drivers from the dell site. The default Windows 7 drivers have no audio crackling/stuttering, but the problem with those is that the integrated microphone array next to the webcam doesn't work with them.

I too am getting the sound stuttering problems in Windows 7 RTM. It's very noticeable when playing Left 4 Dead, or watching IGN video reviews, and even just watching HD youtube.

The sound card appears as "High Definition Audio Device" in Device Manager with the following info:

    Provider: Microsoft
    Date: 7/13/2009
    Version: 6.1.7600.16385
    Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows

I have the m17x that Best Buy is selling.

its not only sound stuttering. the same time that sound stuttering occurs video stutters too. pay attention to that.

smells like bios or hardware issue. i hope they find something finally or i will stay with vista.
