I've done numerous searches in the M17x general information thread & owner's lounge and haven't found any1 individual that specifically points out that the Dell "recommended" AC Adapter, Y044M (210watt) will actually work w/ the M17x laptop.
My M17x laptop shipped w/ a 240 watt AC Adapter, DP/N J938H. I've called Dell three times now.
1) Sales guy hung up on me when I asked him to tell me the output volts & amps on his M6400 precision AC Adapter replacement (Y044M.) Shocker.
2) Sales guy told me to call Alienware because, "We've got an agreement w/ them and don't sell their parts." Then gave me the 1-800-254-3692 number. Which is where I spoke to Dell Sales guy #3.
3) Sales guy said sure just a second. Then put me on infinite hold ;-P
So my question is, will the Precision laptop M6400 AC adapter work for the M17x even though it's 210 watt NOT 240 watt? I've looked all over for more details on the DP/N Y044M AC Adapter but can't specifically find the output volts/amps to give me that warm fuzzy that it will work okay.
BTW, while doing an Intel burn in test w/ Furmark running my BR1500LCD UPS showed it was sucking up to 235 watts of power so I know a 210 watt AC adapter isn't going to cut it.
thanks!

Well, if you know the 210 isn't going to cut it, then what's the point of your post?
You answered your own question! lol -
Do not get the 210watt one as even if it can put out the wattage you need it will evenutally burn up. I hope this helps. God Bless

The part number you will need is j211n....
Yeah, I saw that the y044m, being pushed for the m17x is only 210W. No one answered my question either.
But, I also saw on CNET review of a heavily equipt m17x had a load of 166W. Just the same, I ordered the j211n....(three of them actually) -

qwkhyena,
I went through this exact same frustrating mess for 4 hours on Friday. Here is the scoop:
1) Call Dell Parts at 1-800-357-3355. Press 2, Press 1, Press 2.
2) When you get an agent, tell them that you have a Dell M17x and you want to purchase a spare power adapter. Tell them you've spoken with Alienware and already have the part numbers... this is key or they'll ship you the wrong items.
3) Tell them you need Part #J211H and Part #5120P. (These make up the AC Adapter and Power Cord Assembly that ships with the M17x).
4) Under no circumstances allow them to talk you into anything else. They may give you a line that these sku's are 'refurbished'. In reality they aren't... that just means that they have a 90 day warranty or the warranty of the system you're using them with - whichever is longer. This is normally where they try and sell you the one for a Precision M6400 that won't work... tell them you want the 'refurbished' (aka. actual service part)
5) Your total should be $110.98 + tax and shipping.

qekhyena,
J938H is actually the part number for the original (and problematic) Flextronics-branded adapter that several folks have had die for no reason.
J211H is the current shipping adapter manufactured by Delta Electronics.
My guess is that they've frozen the inventory on the Flextronics part since they've had a run of defective ones... basically so no tech accidentally ships another potentially defective part to an already upset customer.

In a week or so, I'll post confirmation when it gets here. -

qwkhyena,
Correct.... You'll need to order:
J211H - Adapter,Alternating Current External,240W,Delta - Ac Adapt,3P,World
- and -
5120P - Cord,Power,125V,6Feet,SJT, Unshielded
That will get you the complete AC Adapter assembly that ships from the factory with the M17x. FYI - Shipping for me was about $11.

Yes, the J211H AC Adapter is the correct one and works perfectly. I gave the sales guy on the phone the 5120P part number too even though I've got tons of power cords at home. He managed to mess up the later pretty well. He ended up shipping DP/N 06878T which is a 10 foot server quality power cord that cost 22$ each. I still haven't decided if it's worth my time to send them back yet or just throw them in the drawer like all the other power cords at my house.
But the J211H works perfectly. And sure enough, he tried something fierce to sell me the 210 watt one instead (eventually told him I talked w/ AW and these are the part numbers they told me to use.)
Anyhow, thanks to all that helped! I've now got plenty of extra AC Adapters (one for work, one for home & one for travel.)
Cheers,

Well, I inadvertantly ordered the 210W adapters, and then ended up sending me the 240 anyway....
-
This information was awesome. (Rep for you, Denver!) I gave the Dell guy the part number, and he didn't argue or anything... just wrote up an order for two of them. I'd like to point out that even though I ordered the J211H adapters, the invoice showed J938H (which is the exact one that came with my M17x).
Also, this adapter uses a standard computer (or computer monitor) power cord, so if you have a bunch of spares hanging around somewhere, you can save a few bucks by not ordering the 5120P cord. -
that is why i didnt order another adapter because i leave a chord plugged in all my locations and i just plug in the ac adapter that way instead of bending over
-
Dell sales reps are morons. I hate dealing with them and if I could have ordered the adapter online I would have. First, I got sent a Targus 70W adapter...Like this was going to work on a 240W laptop
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=416619
Now, I need to make sure the second moron I speak with orders the correct part numbers that BatBoy gave me and is found here as well.
Let's pray that the M17x that I get at the end of the month is trouble free and I don't have to deal with tech support on top of that. I shiver just thinking about it....
The M17x with Lenovo service would be heaven but it's not happening. So I had to choose between good service and boring laptops (Lenovo) or nice laptops with bad service (Dell).
Sorry for the rant...had to vent a little.
M17x and purchasing 2nd AC Adapter (watts? Y044M? J938H? M6400?)
