Recently I've been having to hardcrash my M17x, and I've been starting to think it's related to Win7...
It runs flawlessly for roughly 2 hours, before the frame-rate comes to a halt, and I usually have to hold down the alien head since it's too laggy to even reach the restart option.

If I don't respond quickly, I'm not neglecting this thread and if this issue / problem cannot be solved easily then just ask for my specs or any additional information you may require.

    Thanks in advance

It sounds like it is overheating. Are you using it on like a bed or something?

Check your fan and heatsink and fan. Should be able to take out a couple screws on the bottom of the laptop to get access to it.

I've checked the fans and they all appear to be operating correctly, and the machine does not seem to be overheating, but the adapter does seem to be rather hot.
    Just had another crash :(

Yes I do actually have hwmonitor, I thought the issue was related to overheating and a user on another forum reccommended it.
Would you like a specific temperature or them all? ^^

The CPU temps stay around 53-65°C depending on activity, and GPU is about 67°C

Normally what are you doing when it crashes? So these temps are when at idle?

Yes these temps are at idle.
I can leave my computer idle for 2 hours, and it will still crash.
When I'm gaming it has the same problem.
It seems to crash regardless of the activity and programs running.

    HI there,

Do you have Windows 7 RC on your computer?
One of the things is that it will shutdown your pc every two hours, so that you upgrate to the final version..

    just my two cents.

Newbie, that is an amazing thought. It might actually be the OP's problem.

The fact that he says it's every two hours makes no sense if it was a heat issue as different programs and games would heat the PC differently over that time frame and crash it within minutes...

Now the question is why would someone have Win 7 RC on an M17X since the PC comes with it?

Not every m17x came with Win7 (mine came with Vista with the free upgrade to Win7.. so I had to install it myself).

So, I could see the OP getting their m17x with Vista then installing Win7 RC on their own (as maybe they got it before they were handing out the free Win7 upgrades).

    Just a possibility

True, I had forgotten that the ones purchase in June 09 when it came out did not have Win 7 since that came out later during the month.

I did the same thing. So I don't think it's to do with the OS neccessarily

Actually the temp. does seem to increase over time now I've studied it more closely. The GPU Core temp goes from around 30 at start-up to around 70 when it crashes. But 70 isn't high enough to be the cause of the crash is it?

How can I lower the temperature?
    Or prevent this incline?

70 is fine for a GPU temp. Don't start worrying about that until it hits 90.

It doesn't sound like heat is your issue.

Another question... how hot is your power supply when your system shuts down?
If you have a flaky brick it could get to over heating after ~2hrs then cause the system to shut down due to uneven power distribution/supply.

    Just a thought

this does seem a little high for just idling, do you have r1 or r2? this has to be one of the strangest problems i've seen so far. can anyone esle with M17x comfirm these idle temps. other wise if you think its a win 7 issue, maybe do a repair or clean install of win7. or run ccleaners to check your registries for errors.

You have reset your BIOS to Default values, right?

And for the sake of asking, checked that there is not a hung application that would be loading up your CPU?

The problem was fixed by a clean reinstall of Win7.
I've seen a few threads like these, maybe there's a problem with the M17x's that come with Vista and a free upgrade to Windows 7?
Anyhow it's been fixed, thanks for your support.

My M15x started doing this exact same thing yesterday. I thought I had Windows Update turned off but an update was executed the night before. I rolled back to an earlier restore point before the update and everything is fine now. I couldn't even open a single application or a webcam without it crashing.

Yeah, I've never performed a dirty install of any OS for this reason exactly.

Good job on getting the problem fixed.

    Game on Garth!

I would say your cpu idle temps are pretty high too btw. Are you overclocking?
