I've tryed 9.2, 9.4 ,8.10, 9.6 and running 9.10 drivers right now. None let me OC at all. All the application you mention earlier Freeze the computer when i try to install them.

Seems likes they are factory locked or have a special Bios... It's not the same bios as the 4870 in W90 have.

Also there no way to dump the bios as all application say the hardware not recognize or something .. !? :(

It is not possible for me to install the regular driver in Windows 7 due to the driver auto-installing feature of Windows 7 and it is very frustrating. I end up using mob mod which gave me better score in various benchmark and enable the overclocking of the card.My card currently runs at 550/900 without any problems.I still haven't figure out the maximum clock.Guess I will do it when I'm free.

Oc the gpu vs cpu. How many extra fps did you get in games by oc'ing the gpu? What is this number versus using setfsb to oc the cpu? If you are only getting 2 fps more by oc'ing the cards do you think it is a good trade off (gpu life vs 2 fps)? I am just curious. No disrespect intended. I get about 1000 to 1200 points in 3dmark06 by oc'ing my cpu by 300mhz. I always wonder what fps does this really add up to.

Also.. say for instance you are using 8.10 driver. The later the drivers you utilize the better the performance in games (usually.. not always). What if just by installing 9.8 or 9.10 you get 5 to 10 fps better in most games but you can't oc the gpu. vs using 8.10 driver, getting 2 fps more by oc? Does this make sense? What is the real benefit by using older drivers to oc vs newer ones that increase performance.

    Just curious...

    Thanks, stevenx

I can confirm, mob modding catalyst 9.10 don't give access to overclocking function. Still freezing

well, it's probably a Video BIOS thing. use Radeon BIOS editor to see if the VBIOS of the cards have an OC limit under Additional Features (when using RBE).

Also, have you had any luck overclocking just one card (crossfire disabled)?

I've tryed with only 1 card with no luck. Atitool or other application can't dump the bios saying "can't recognize the chipset" error or something. Can RBE dump bios or change the fact it can be locked ?

Have you tried techpowerup! gputool community preview?
    This one:

I couldn't overclock with most applications on my 4850s either, but gputool worked, I've been recommending it since for this sort of scenario, even if it is a little basic (and I wish they'd update it).

    http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1383/GPUTool_Community_Technology_Preview_1.html

Try it, it helped me to get a 10.6k vista GPU score with my M17 (4850m crossfire) :)

It's good to see that there are overclocking tools for ATi cards available.
What about Nvidia cards, though? Is there any tool besides Nvidia System Tools/nTune that works with GTX 280Ms? I can't use NST/Ntune since they crash my system for whatever reason.

I did that, it's still the same problem. I think the problem stems from Ntune trying to overclock the CPU as well instead of just overclocking the video cards when I load a previously saved profile (on startup, for example).
Is there any way to force Ntune to only remember the settings for the video cards, but not for the mainboard/cpu?

I'm not embarrassed to admit that I've never overclocked my GPU before. Is there a serious risk if I mess something up (as in, overclock too much?), or will my system simply shut down?

Here are something new, i was able to dump the bios. Look like the 2 card use the same bios. When i edit it with RBE it say Overdrive is not present or the card is not compatible.. well we can still change mhz and flash to see if it work.

voltage 1.100, after some testing on OC i was able to flash the 2 card at 650 gpu and 900 memory... it gave me 700pts in 3dmark2006
    16476 pts
    higher clock just crash game.

hmm, so 650 GPU at 1.1v? that's pretty good, though the memory should be higher (the samsung spec sheet suggests that the memory should be able to reach 1000mhz). I had to bump the voltages higher than that on the W90 (it can handle 1.2v, but not recommended IMO) to get up to 650mhz.

If you can, try entering 1.15 volts, which should allow for more stability at those numbers as well as higher clocks. In your case, maybe 1.13v would suffice.

So with 1.15 the card just start the fan and go into "too hot" mode after 3 min of bench. But here is the max i can do

    cpu : 650 memory: 1000 cpu: 3.3ghz
    Far cry 2
    Average Framerate: 61,89
    Max. Framerate: 92,08
    Min. Framerate: 45,74

normal score for a 4870 x2 would be 120fps average... here you see were we lost the 50 % bandwigth

    Here we go.
    Far cry 2 ultra high

    Average Framerate: 57,31
    Max. Framerate: 87,43
    Min. Framerate: 39,89

My other bench with the Oc was done on ultra high at 1920x1200 too

it dosn't crash, it just goes into a new mode that is really low clocked. Then the bench look like terrible. In Borderlands, with 1.15v the game just crash. Will test 4XFSAA and 8X Anisotropic filtering enabled after work.

    Edit: i'm back at gpu 650 / memory 900 1.1v for stability.

Thanks guys, I'm running at 630/900 now (650 gives me a white screen after a little while, so does 640). CPU is at 3.3, any bothered with OCing RAM?

Dump the bios with Ati tool, edit it with RBE, flash with atiflash via usb booted in dos.

that's the way i make it

i overclock by 10mhz step at a time
